Last minute trip to Phonm Penh

by Homanded

I a ma tour operator having to switch my party of 15 clients to Phonm Penh.
We were schedueled to fly to Bangkok in 4 weeks but due to the civil unrest, have had to cancel and are now coming to PP for 4 days.

Could you please advice best area (close to markets, tourist attractions as well as hotels) to do my search on?
As time is of the essence, your speedy replies would be very appreciated.
We are continuind to Siem Reap for 3 days from PP.

Thank you VT community.

In PP if you stayed on the riverfront (Sisowath Quay) between Streets 144 and 178, you could walk to many of the main sights. There are many hotels and guest houses in that area. In SR, stay near the Old Market.

Thank you Ray, I'll look and see if I can find hotels in that area.

i stayed at the imperial garden hotel with a group recently and they totally loved the place.
it's very well located by the river just 5 minutes walk from the royal palace and the national museum:

Paul,

Would you mind explaining why you made that comment?
It sounded like a personal dig?
If so, totally uncalled for, if misunderstood, then I apologize for my defensiveness.
Can you please respond?

imperial garden is rated as a 4 star hotel but it's as good as most 5 star hotels when you ask me.
the only problem i had was that my group was moaning about the two lastr hotels they were staying at in other places in cambodia because they were missing the imperial gardens.

Hi Homer,
I agree that the Sisowarth Quay area is the area to stay. I have also stayed lake-side but that is more for budget travellers.

You could also look at The Royal Inn, which is a little way south of the Independance Monument, on Sothearos Blvd. A $1 tuk-tuk ride to Sisowarth.

Thank you Klaus, bets!
Yes, I have definitely decided to go with that choice Klaus and I am awaiting their response now.
It is so difficult making these last minuted changes.
I am responsible for 15 personal friends/colleagues and do not want to dissapoint.
It is unfortunate that the civil unrest in beautiful Thailand has lasted this long.

Re: Last minute trip to Phonm Penh

And the unrest seems far frim over.

The army might wipe the protesters out of town but they seen very organised and determined and will most likely start bombings of various places around the country if they are driven out of town and that will not make it safer to be a tourist there.

But at least Pnom Penh is a very interesting town with quite a bit to see so i think your friends will be happy enough.

Travel Tips for Phnom Penh

Visa on Arrival

by AlbuqRay

When you fly into Phnom Penh, the airline will give you two forms to fill out. You will need them but if you want a Visa on Arrival, you will have to get another form in the arrival area, fill it out, give them your passport and form, and wait as your paperwork is processed real-time behind the counter. You then pay $20 ($1 more if you don't have a passport photo) and get your passport back with the visa in it. Only after doing this can you pick up your luggage and proceed through immigration. I was going to take more pictures of this process, but a guard told me not to take more pictures when he saw me do the first one. BTW, it may cost $20 to get into Cambodia, but don't forget to save $25 to get out (departure tax).

Using International Mobile Phone

by Pakistaniguy

If you are travelling with a mobile phone on international roaming facility then please do check the call rates first because it is very very expensive to use roaming mobile phone in Cambodia. When you’ll get back home and see your bill then be ready for a shock ;-)

Similarities to Malaysian Culture

by stimix

Everywhere I visited in Cambodia both Siem Riep & Phnom Penh, I can see similarities in the cultures, day to day living, food and to a smaller extend the religions.

Although Malaysia is a multi-racial melting pot. But similarities were noted on the type of food in the market, the wet market where almost all sellers are women..(As those Malaysian Wet Market in the state of Trengganu & Kelantan). The light desserts very similar to Malay's & Baba nyonya desserts in Malaysia, The Cham's muslim dressing, head gear, and even their language is similar to Bahasa Melayu/Indonsia. For Khmer culture, the Royal Palace ceremonial gears, umbrella & flags having lotsa similarities with the Hinduism practised in Bali, Indonesia.

For those Malaysian visiting Cambodia, it is a must to check those similarities. And for those Malays of Malaysia/Indonesia/Singapore, visiting a muslim Cham's Kampong and ability to communicate with them in Bahasa Melayu/Indonesia will be another interesting activities.

Before I forget...do note also similarities in naming their vilages as "Kampong" and the eating stall "Waroeng"

Keep your hands clean and out of your mouth

by thedouglas

We always take either cleansing wet towelletes, or a disinfecting handwash - which is refreshing and quickly absorbed - and make sure that we wash our hands before we eat anything! It is so easy to pick up bugs just from what you touch, so this is a start to helping to have a healthy holiday.

Mind you, one of my memorable experiences was sitting at a restaurant, when I was still quite sick, and just "happening" to notice one of the waitresses picking her nose! Geez - best not to look in the kitchen - and I am guessing that they don't use the handwipes!
