View of the Sunway Hotel lobby by BigJon I stayed at the Sunway Hotel in Phnom Penh. The pictures on the web site are accurate and the location is decent. A moto taxi to about anywhere reasonably close in Phnom Penh is 5000 riel (a little over a dollar). It's also within daytime walking distance of Wat Phnom. And if you don't mind walking in hot weather, you can also walk to the riverside area or palace. The facilities were clean and good. The drawback was that it is expensive and they did not budge much on the rate ($80 single, $90 double). I e-mailed and asked if there was any discount for long stays and/or multiple rooms. The best quote I got was the same that a local Khmer-speaker was able to get at $80 per double, $73 for single before tax. So, please note you can't negotiate much like you can some other places.
The AC in the lobby and downstairs was quite powerful. It felt great. The AC in the rooms was so so. The room views were good - the front side of the hotel looks park like grounds. From the rear side of the hotel, you can see Wat Phnom and the Palace off in the distance. Transportation is easy - plenty of motos outside wave at you whenever you walk out of the door. You can also hire a car or van with driver via the hotel (or on your own). There is NO POOL. A friend and I found that out after asking the front desk. I was wearing a swimming suit, had on a t-shirt, and sandals. He was wearing a swimming suit, no shirt, no shoes, and a towell. I was embarassed and the receptionist is probably still in shock. The cable TV is good - 55 channels from pretty much everywhere in the world. There are mainland chinese stations, Thai stations, Vietnamese, Indian, Spanish, Tagalog, Malay, Singapore, Indonesian, European, American, Latin American, etc. You name it they got it. The breakfast buffet was good and fortunately came with the room. It included western food and Chinese items primarily with a large assortment of fruits, meats, cereals, etc. My only complaint is the juice was a bit fake. by Cathy&Gary We always stay with friends in Phnom Penh so no need for hotels, various friends have stayed in the 3 hotels in my tips and have good things to say about all of them. Friends who went to Phnom Penh on business asked us to recommend a hotel, we had been to Sunway a few times for dinks so recommended this hotel to the,. They enjoyed their stay, brief as it was! All rooms at the Sunway Hotel have king sized beds, air-conditioning, international direct dial telephone lines, television with satellite programmes, mini-bar, personal safe deposit box, key card system, hair dryer and complimentary coffee and tea making. Deluxe balcony rooms have a big balcony overlooking the street in front of the hotel. The deluxe balcony rooms come highly recommended by our friends. There is also a fitness center, spa, steam baths, sauna, massage and jacuzzi at the Sunway. The hotel is surrounded by colonial buildings, library, post office and the city hall. It is also close to the embassies Wat Phnom. There is one restaurant which is open all day.. Buffet lunch and dinner are highly recommended here, snacks and refreshments are available in the Lobby Lounge. The Airport is about a 20 minute drive away.
