Update February 2010.
I have just spent a few nights in the Walkabout and apart from the board for the very popular Joker lottery having moved from one wall to another, not a single thing has changed in nine years. It was like walking into a time warp! Speaking of time warp, I just looked at the photo I originally used to accompany this tip. Amazingly, I am travelling this time with the same T-shirt (an old Fairport Convention gig one)! Totally unplanned, how's that for synchronicity?
Obviously, prices have gone up a bit and rooms now range from $10 US for a small ensuite single to $30 for a double with jacuzzi bath and balcony. Still a great place, still very popular (I had to move out as they were fully pre-booked) and still recommended.
I stayed here in 2001 and found it to be very good. It's a bit of a step up from the backpacker places, but not nearly as expensive as one of the chain hotels. the rooms are spotless with fridge, cable TV and hot water (if it's not hot enough for you already).
The staff were friendly and food was available 24 hours a day - both Western and Khmer.
When I was there, it was owned by an Australian and his Khmer wife, with a New Zealander as general manager.
Unique Quality: The unique feature is that the bar is open 24 hours a day - every day. This is always a plus point for me!
This is a good and cheap hotel in the center of Phnom Penh. It is located right by many of the attractions and is a great deal. Info. from hotel:
Central location - very easy to get around. Only three blocks to the Royal Palace & National Museum. Central Market & Tonle Sap are nearby.
Clean, Comfortable Rooms with private facilities. Cable TV, AC, fans, fridges.
Great food.
Live sporting events on our new GIANT SIZE TV projection screen.
Bar & Restaurant open 24 hours. We never close & we are the only place open late at night.
Only Ice Cold Beers - Australian, Cambodian & imported from Thailand, Laos, etc.
Slate top Pool Table with weekly competition open to everyone on Tuesday nights, with bar tabs for all the winner's. Kelly Pool every Thursday night.
the price is great, only 12 - 25 $ for a double room to a suite.
For $8 I had a fair-sized room, satelite TV, bathroom with shower, a fridge and a fan. I don't like air conditioning, but an AC room will go for $12. A room without a fridge is $6.
The picture was taken in the bar on the ground floor. The helpful Australian was running a 'joker' game - therefore the hat.
Unique Quality: I loved the place, even though it was very basic (but reasonably clean). The place is open 24/24 and there's a bar/snooker on the ground floor. Ambiance guaranteed. There's a guard at the door to look over the safety of your bike. Centrally located.

It was interesting to say the least. We booked this hotel from Australia and as it was the only response from any hotel we emailed we booked it. The owner is a Kiwi nice helpful bloke. We were theonly 4 woman at least non working woman!!!!! The bar was full of European men and yong bar girls!!! We sat in the restaurant which is in the bar and were entertained for hours by the antics of the men and woman. we sapend the evening trying to pin point the married men form the singles!!! We couldnt understand the woman but they were speechless when they saw us. Got to be the loud music that goes on all night and the pool tables it could also be the company one keeps!!!!! The bedding was clean even though my friend and I ended up sharing as we were given one single room on the top floor which none of us fancied!!!
Really can't say it was a bad experience but we didn't go back on our return to PP.
After we arrived in PP and csaught a taxi to the hotel the driver warned us not to go into the street as it was not safe. We took his advice.
Can't realy say it was a bad experience just not what we expected. Now people ask me how I could of taken my 65 yr old mother to stay in a brothel!!!!! It makes a good story.
The good thing about the Walkabout is its central location. Otherwise the basic and slightly untidy rooms with shared bath wouldn't be worth 5$.

Hi we are having a few problems booking accomodation in Phnom Penh. We have sent off numerous emails to many guest housese and have had very few responses except from Capitol to say they are full.
We aren't so concerned about accomodation as we are organising transport to Siem Reap the following morning. We are using the Sinh Cafe bus from HCM to PP and hoping the following moring to catch the bus to SR. Does anyone else have transport (bus)apart from Capitol GH?? If we arrive in PP late at night will we have a problem arranging transport for the following day??? Any advice appreciated. We do not want to go by boat.
