Keeping your walking stick
by SLLiew
If you have hiked up or down Mt. Huangshan, you probably have bought a walking stick.
A walking stick is very useful even if you are just going up and down by cable cars and walking the steps on the top of Mt. Huangshan. Help you to balance and reduce the weight on your knees. You may not feel it in your knees now, you could feel it in the future.
Get one that is light and shorter that can fit into your luggage bag. Do not throw them away. Take them home as souvenir to remember those wonderful and tiring moments at Mt. Huangshan.

This rock is famous of its shape like a Chinese writing bristle. Its name is 'Meng Bi Sheng Hua' ('Dreamed Pen of Fine Essays'). The name came from a Chinese story: a young man traveled to the capitol for the 'official exam' (Court official selection system), he dreamed that he had such a magic pen enables him to write all fancy essays at the exam and he beated all his rivals.
Climbing Huangshan (Yellow Mountain)

"Some of the 4,000 Steps to the Top"
Yes, you can take a cable-car to the top and then walk down. But for some of the more adventurous (i.e. stupid) souls, like me, you can climb the steps ...and climb..and climb...until you reach the top.
"About Half-Way There....."
the magic starts to take over....
"4,000 Steps and 3 Hours Later..."
ah...it is so worth it!
More Of Huangshan

The hotels on top of Huangshan get supplies by having people carry things on a yoke which is on their shoulders. They will carry 100 kilos over approximately 4,500 steps for about 10 Yuan, or about $1.25. It takes them about 4 hours to make the trip. Then they turn around and make a downhill trip, so their entire salary for the day is about $2.50. On the way up and down there are tourist who share the steps with them, and will sometimes hit the packages the workers are carrying. You can tell who has worked there a long time as their calves are extremely large and muscular. Unfortunately, some of the workers were around 60-70 years old.
I saw a few Chinese people give the workers some money at the top of the mountain. It is to help them out financially. They certainly deserve it. Amazing....
"Throw Away the Key to My Heart"
It is a tradition that you buy a pair of locks, carve your names on it, and lock them together on a chain. After that, you throw the keys off the cliff - it is said that by doing this that you and your love one will be 'locked' together your whole life.
I've also heard that they have made extra copies of keys and that the vendors are able to 'reclaim' the locks and scratch the names off, so they can be used again. :)
"A Man Watching Over a Pagoda"
Well, at least that's what I call it. lol. I'm sure the Chinese have a more creative name for it. Nevertheless once you are on top of the mountain you can spend hours looking at the views and exploring the backside, etc. (including the west side of the mountain which offers Indiana Jones-type bridges and phobia-inducing drops and views).
