Huang Shan Pine Ridge Lodge: Storyin Huangshan
天客山庄 = 天外來客山庄
Ok bed. Not very very clean room, a little humid. The air conditioner too close to the bed.
Nice dinning room lunch local cuisine, compared to the famous 游豆腐 hostel at the town, this lodge offer cheaper price but better quality cuisine, actually it is much more better than many chain restaurant in big cities in China. Highly recommend it's dinning room for your lunch and dinner!
Very nice staff, they are all happy and friendly, I guess they have a nice boss :)
Anything in reasonable price here.
Free pick up from the town(Lodge location close to the south entrance).
Free map and good advice about Huangshan area.
Very big garden.
Free Internet (wi-fi) in "some" room(room close to the stairs).
Internet booking from agoda, easy book ... etc.
*No street light close to the lodge at night, and the area is under construction, too dangerous, so if you go back at night, you can call the lodge to pick you up.

Yungdu Hotel: Hotel at Foot of Mountain
The Yungu Hotel is a 3-star hotel situated at Cloud Valley Scenic Area, which is a 5 minute walk from the cable car which takes you to the top of Huangshan. Alternatively, the stairs begin at the cable car entrance also. It is located amongst a bamboo forest and its decor is very typical Chinese and very nice and interesting. The rooms are average and the breakfast (buffet) is Chinese and not too bad. It is very clean and relatively less expensive ($35/night in June, 2007). You would want to stay here for the atmosphere, reasonable rates, the bamboo forest and stream, and the proximity to the cable cars and east side ascent.
Note that you fly into Tunxi, the nearest airport, and it is about 1- 1 1/2 hours drive to Huangshan. I paid something like $60 roundtrip for airport-hotel-airport by a private driver which the hotel arranged. I imagine there are cheaper alternatives (bus, etc.).
Unique Quality: See above- bamboo forest, zen-like atmosphere, decor.

There is free pick up service from HuangShan Airport/HuangShan Train Station to hotel.
Unique Quality: Has golf facilities (18 holes).

Guangmingding Hotel: Brilliant Peak
I stayed one night in the dorm at the top of this hotel but wouldn't really recommend it because my room was dank and chilly and smelled bad. No shower facilities in the upper dorm rooms, only toilets and sinks.
I think the rooms downstairs are better.
Unique Quality: The location is on top of the Brilliant Peak (Guangmingding).

Huangshan Hot Spring Hotel: Last minute shopping!
This shopping "mall" is located on the second floor of Hot Spring Hotel. It is ideal to make the last minute shopping before climbing up Mount Huangshan. I bought a very valuable & needy walking stick - only 20 RMB!. It's got a head of a dragon, so I called it Lao Long (=Old Dragon). The stick literally saved my life after hiking & climbing those millions of steps up on the mountain peaks. I was exhausted and tired and could only lean on to my Lao Long & was saved from being dropped down on the cliffs!
BE EXTRA CAREFULL!!
So you will defenately need a walking stick climbing up those steps!

Huangshan Hot Spring Hotel (Wenquan Dajiudian): At the bottom of Mount Huangshan
One of the best locations to access the mountain. Located down hill 1-2 kilometers from Yupinglou Telpher Station at the beginning of Western Steps. Taoyuan Hotel is next on the way to the mountain.
I could say this is a 2-star hotel with untidy damp rooms. The aircondition was not working. Very filthy fitted carpet on the floor with tiny creatures (had some company in the bathroom as well). Had trouble sleeping 'cos of the other guests (chinese) had to communicate through doors in the middle of the night (well, this problem is everywhere!).
But the LOCATION IS BEST! You will not have to stay here for weeks! ;-)) Price is affordable! 200 RMB!!

Jiu Long/Nine Dragon hotel: Air China run hotel
It is 5 minutes drive from the Emerald Valley and 9-Dragon waterfall area that most tourists miss.
We planned to stay at the West Lake Hotel at the first day. When we arrived to the Tun Xi airport, the taxi drivers (many of them await at the airport) told us because of the thunderstorm, the Yun Gu cable way would not operate thus no way for us to get to the hotel that afternoon. Instead, they took us to this hotel. The taxi fleet seemed to be run by the Air China as well, so they are all of the same system.
Unique Quality: The food is nothing special. Room, simple but comfortable.
The hotel can arrange free taxi taking you to Emerland Valley and 9-Dragon waterfall area, that we did. We liked the areas, not crowded and interesting.
Since the hotel is so close to the sites, he left us and went home. After we finished exploring the waterfall area, we had a good chat with the local restaurant owner and local people while waiting for the taxi driver to pick us up.
From here, next moring, a taxi took us straightly to the Yun Gu cable way station.

Yu Ping Lou/Jade Screen Mansion hotel: Best choice before climbing the Tian Du Feng
Details later.
This is the best choice if you plan to hike to the Tian Du Feng (celestrial capital peak) next morning: you can get up early, before the crowds rushing in, and come back after conquering the peak and take a shower then move on.

Huangshan Hot Spring Hotel: Green Tile Roof
Located at the 'base' of the hot spring area of the mountain park, where many hotels are located.
This was the last hotel we stayed after a 2-day hike.
Unique Quality: In 1998, the hot water seemed to be sufficent only in evenings, so good time to take a shower right after a sweaty hike, but the water was pretty cold if you want to take a morning shower.
Many Chinese like to base in one hotel for their multi-day hiking. We think it is wasting time, better strategy is to stay in different hotels when hiking along. Anyway, since they base in one hotel, they usually get up around 4-5 AM, waking up everyone by knocking doors of all their friends, and others by mistake sometimes. So be prepared for that and do not be panic if your door among considered 'their friends'.
The hotel is simple, nothing to brag about. But it has a traditional style tile roof (photo later).

Yu Ping Lou Hotel: Stay on top of the mountain at Huangshan
It's a good idea to stay on the summit for at least one night so that you can take a chance at getting a sunrise photo opportunity. Beihai is the best area for this photogrpahy but the hotel there is overpriced. Yupinglou is located next to the Welcoming Guests Pine and has a spectacular view of one of Huangshan's highest peaks. This one is also close to the cable car so it's convenient for those who want to visit Huangshan but for health reasons may not be able to do much hiking.
See my accompanying Tunxi page for tips on buying Chinese antiques. Tunxi is the town with hotels close to Huangshan where most tourists spend their first evening upon arrival.
