Room is small but land is prime up the mountain slope.
Appreciate the hair dryer as it helped to dry some of my wet clothes after the hike.
Hotel also has foot and body massage service which is great to relaxed the muscles after a day of climbing.
Hotel is smaller and more private. Famous Hong Kong movie actor and singer Andy Lau chose to stay in this hotel and so the tour guide kept reminding me.
Recommend for the privacy and comfort if you can afford the price.
We stayed at the Shilin in July, 2005. If you are interested in taking some time at the summit, it is a decent place to stay. The lobby is nice and they had internet access for guests in the evening. I was able to get into my yahoo mail and send and receive e-mail to my friends and family in the USA . The price was very reasonable.
The restaurant is also pretty good, but don't expect the staff to speak English. Most tables are reserved for the tour groups, so if you go on your own you will probably sit towards the back. But, its just part of the adventure.
The rooms are quite small and a little musty. The bathrooms are very small and more than a little musty. But, you are on the top of a mountain in China. While you may not get all the comforts of home, this hotel is adequate If you really want to see the mountain.
Booking this hotel can be a challenge if you do not speak Chinese. There are a couple internet services that can book you for independent travel. As far as I can tell, the Shilin Hotel does not book directly over the internet, although I expect that may change. I used Huangshan International Travel Service over the internet. I ended up having to wire my deposit through the Bank of China in New York, which was a bit of an "adventure". While it worked out well, it was a bit of a hassle. Johnson Yeh, who runs the company, is a very nice man -- with a Ph.D from Johns Hopkins!
