hiking huangshan from the northern side
by squash2009
Hi all,
I have read much about the eastern and western steps. Can anyone tell me more about hiking up Huangshan from the Taiping/Songgu Scenic area? I am planning to spend 2-3 nights at the summit area of Huangshan (perhaps one night each at Beihai, Paiyunlou and Baiyun)

Wow, that's going to cost you quite a bit of cash staying up there for so long... I hope you're going for dorm rooms and NOT staying on Fri/Sat nights.
I don't think I've seen any reports or heard from anyone about hiking up from the north side. However, my pet recommendation is the West Sea Canyon, which you start from the upper station of Taiping cable car. Not sure if that's what you're looking for.
Travel Tips for Huangshan
No smoking in some areas
by gwen_tifa
Not sure if this should be included in this section. Apparently you are not free to smoke wherever you like. There are designated areas for smoking. I guess the reason could be that your smoke might create discomfort for other climbers (I mean, you can't be inhaling smoke when you are panting on your way up the mountains, YOu need oxygen!). I think the only place where you can smoke is in the hotel and withing radius of approximately 500 metres from there.or at the base of the mountain. And yes, perhaps oxygen is limited up there. Cheers to non-smokers?
'Fairy Islands of Peng...

'Fairy Islands of Peng Lai'namde after its shape. In Chinese legend, there are few islands in the east China sea where some fairy people lived. This is the first thing you see after you leave the Greeting Pine. We left around 7:00 in the morning. Remember you have to be ahead of everyone else especially those tour group people. The steepness of hike is nothing comparing to when people push you around: very dangerous!

Huangshan - Last Visit in May 1998

Huangshan is one of China's most popular natural attractions with its splendid scenery. It attracts many hikers as there are no roads that lead to many of the scenic areas. Be prepared to hike the entire day through mist and trees. I'll let the photos tell you the story...
