 | | | | Red Lantern: Hostel | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I enjoyed my stay in 'Red Lantern' very much. - the room was good, - the atmosphere was great, - the stuff was helpful, - laundry services, - Internet services, - offering tours and airport transfer. NOTE: They have 2 buildings, located within 7 minutes walk from each other. The main building has dormitories, the second one(where we stayed) offers private rooms with bathrooms. To check in, you`ll have to go to the main building first. As for check out, you can do so in either of them. PRICE: We payed total of 220RMB ($27.5) per night for a room with 2 beds and a private bathroom. Other Prices: - Internet. 1RMB for 10 minutes, - Airport pickup. 160RMB ($20), - Bringing to the airport. 150RMB ($18.75), - CD burn. 15RMB ($1.9), - Big bottle of water. 5RMB ($0.6), - Small bottle of orange juice. 4RMB ($0.5), - Bowl of dumplings. 15RMB ($1.9), - Breakfast (bacon, french fries, 2 eggs) is about 20RMB ($2.5), - Tour to the Great Wall (MuTianYu). 180RMB ($22.5).
Since it`s located in hutongs, it was really interesting to live there. I also liked the inside yards - they are like living rooms where everybody gathers to eat/chat/use Internet. | | | | Zhu Yuan Binguan (Bamboo Garden Hotel): A courtyard hotel on a Hutong near the lakes | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Before going to Harbin, I stayed one night at a conventional hotel, the Songhe. How ordinaire, and what a sterile neighborhood (Wangfujing). But for my real time in Beijing, I stayed at the Bamboo Garden, and that was very special. Cute small room with polished floor and antiques, fine breakfast, helpful staff, very quiet. It is an unusual neighborhood to stay in, but for me it really hit the spot.
If you stay at the Bamboo Garden, learn right away how it connects to the lake area by going deeper in the Hutong. That way you can use the metro nearby for major transportation, but you can simply walk through the Hutong to the lakes, the restaurants, the little tea shops... | | | | Taiwan Hotel Beijing: Good Location Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The location is excellent - it's right on Wangfujing street, a major shopping area, and a nice 15-20 minute walk to Tianemen Square. Across the street is a very upscale restaurant, Quan Jia Fu. Taxis are easy to catch in front of the hotel, a convenience store is right next door, and a Bank of China ATM is right down the street. Most of the front desk clerks speak passable English. The maid staff spoke no English at all, except "clean room?" If you don't bring along your own laptop: Internet access is available a few blocks away for only 3RMB per hour. Internet access is also available at the hotel's business center, but it's 6RMB per MINUTE and is ridiculously slow. Upon arrival at the Taiwan Hotel, we realized that the heating system in our room didn't work. We called the front desk, who sent up people to check it out. Within a half hour, we were upgraded to a better room at no cost. Excellent service.
All rooms have internet access. Call the front desk for the cord you need to plug into your laptop. Cost is about $6 USD for 24 hours, and the connection speed is excellent. Currency exchange is available at the front desk. The hotel has a few different restaurants; we ate only at the buffet next to the lobby. The buffet is about $7 USD and is very good, with a mixture of American and Chinese dishes. We booked this hotel at sinohotel and had no problems whatsoever checking in. We had a twin-room rate of $53 USD per night at off-season rates. You are not allowed to bring visitors to your room after 11pm. Just an FYI. | | | | Park Plaza Beijing Wangfujing: A Great Hotel Right Downtown Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Located centrally in the Wangfujing area, this hotel is close to everywhere you want to get to downtown. The subway station is right out the door for those areas that are not downtown, or you can arrange to hire a driver at the front desk for daytrips. Service was great! Rooms were cleaned twice daily. Front desk was very helpful regarding local information, and everyone there spoke English, even if just a little. Breakfast buffet was delicious, a mix of Chinese and western. Clientelle was mostly a mix of Chinese travelling in-country and Europeans from various countries. Rooms start at about 700 yuan/night (depending on room and occupancy), and go up from there.
This is a newer hotel, and has already won service awards, as well as best new hotel in 2006. There are lounges on both the ground and uppermost floors, with an exercize room on the second floor. Three restaurants. But no pool, which was a disappointment... | | | | Swissotel Beijing Hong Kong Macau Center: Convenient business hotel Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I have stayed here several times and it has never disappointed me as a business hotel and as a location for this purpose. The first thing I look for when I enter a hotel room on a job related trip is writing and computer space and the hotel's business centre. In this respect the Swissotel is great, even if the business centre's prices are a bit over the top, with photocopying and printing being very expensive. Rooms vary a bit in size and convenience, but I have always slept well in good beds here, too, even if jet lag has been haunting me from time to time. Convenient location for subway and airport access.
The evening dinner buffet at the hotel lobby area restaurant is excellent, and I have taken delight in seeing noodles being made from raw materials and cooked to order for me. The breakfast buffet here is also fine, but I'm just not much of a breakfast person... Don't ask for a large cappuchino here, though, they will be coming with a pint of it - seriously! For very good in-hotel dining, try the eclectic and upmarket Asian Happy Valley restaurant here. Steamed fish is excellent; romantic place, too.... For some souvenir, clothing and antiques shopping there is a good place past the stationary/book shop which you see to the left of the lobby. Further in the corridor is an ATM of Bank of China, very convenient. The postal office/EMS counter in the same area offers its services sourly and reluctantly in my experience, but then it's government... The lobby bar area could do well without the singing ladies with splits up to the armpits in their new style qipao outfits; Swissotel - why not have two bar areas - one for the music thing and one for quiet after-the-day contemplation?
