Yes, it will be very hot then.

Re: Weather

a couple of co-workers were there last august and they fell ill because of the humidity and heat. so make sure you have a bottle of water with you at all times and a hand towel would come in handy too.

Hot and dusty, enjoy!

I will be there too for the Olympics :) Expect the Olympics atmosphere and the events will be wonderful and overwhelming. So will not be too worried about weather and air quality. After all millions of Beijingers and a number of expats work and live there all year round.

Re: Weather

Yes, we do live here all year round but it is quite disgusting! The last two days have been really REALLY awful...so humid and sticky....but then it rained like CRAZY last night and today has been a nice cool day.

But August will be humid and quite sauna-esque. Well on the other hand maybe the govt. will do something that will stop this horrible feeling...they seem to make it rain with their chemicals they shoot up into the air so anything is possible!! Maybe we'll have blue skies everyday!!! Also, pigs might fly!

Travel Tips for Beijing

Forbidden City

by nepalgoods

General informations:

At Meridian Gate (the Gate, where you pass only after buying a ticket), visitors can rent an audio tape in lots of languages with a player, which introduces the history and architecture of the palace. The tape and player can be returned at the north gate of the Palace Museum. That is a nice and easy way to learn a bit about the palace, when you don't have a guided tour.

Don't forget to visit the Jingshan (Coal Hill) Park, on the opposite of the palace's north gate, from where you can see the splendid layout of the palace.

Opening time:8:00-16:00 (May-September); 8:30-15:30 (October-April);

Entry ticket: 60 yuan/person (busy season), 40 yuan/person (slow season);

Some of the museums have additional charges.

Transport:
--Subways: Line 1: get down at Tian'anmen East, Line 3: get down at Qianmen;

--Buses: No. 1, 4, 5, 10, 20, 22, 52, 57, 802;

It is within walking distance from Wangfujing, Xidan or Qianmen.

Beijing Language University

by Nprawira

The dormitories in the Beijing Language University range from the abysmal to brand new comfort. It is another testament to the absurdity of government regulation that you could pay for almost the same rate but getting the bad end of the deal. Long term students, studying for at least a semester, will be paying Y50/night for a standard 2 bedroom with personal bathroom, TV and refrigerator. Rate will go up to Y58/night during the summer starting from 1st of May. The rooms in the new building 17 go for Y55/night and then Y65/night during the summer.

Real pearls!

by cinthya_in_victoria about Beijing Li Heng Tong Pearl

After our Summer Palace tour, we were taken to this pearl cultivated store.
At the entrance they show you a short video (in your own language) of how the pearls are cultivated and then, they take an oyster out from a pool, open it and show you the pearls inside of it. Each of us were given one pearl for free!

There are many kinds of necklace, bracelet and earings there. They have sea water pearls as well. From the ancient time, people have teasured and believed pearls are the symbol of luck.
A pearl necklace will be a wonderful souvenir to your mom, wife or girlfriend!! Pearl cream and all kind of jewlery as much as your credit card allows you

Taxis

by snuggie

If you are a non chinese speaking,make sure that the taxi driver know where exactly where you want to go before boarding.
However even if you know how to speak chinese,the accent may still be different and it better to write down the address where you are going.
I had a experience with a taxi where he drove us to the wrong hotel (both hotels have almost the same pronunciation in chinese but different words)
