visa question
by redjam3
Hi folks, just about to book holiday when i remembered something. Twelve years ago i was fined for a road traffic offence (technically a spent criminal offence) does the visa application require this information? and if so, does anyone know if it affects the application? Embassy phone keeps ringing out and the email address does'nt work. Thanks for any advice.
Re: visa question

Answer all the questions in the visa application honestly and you should be OK. There was even a note in the applications said "even you were refused visa before you still can apply for new visa. I don't think traffic violation was in the questionnaire.

Thanks Menado, I downloaded the form after posting and noticed it was'nt required. (Doh!) Thank you for your response though.
Travel Tips for Beijing
Chinese Culture Club
by Jeeem
While staying at my hotel in Beijing, I happened to pick up a local magazine entitiled "Beijing Monthly" which had many interesting articles in it, as well as maps and recommendations of places to go and see.
One one of the pages was an advertisement about the Chinese Culture Club in Beijing, which organized various activities for expats living in Beijing or visiting.
The website can be located at:
www.chinesecultureclub.org While vacationing in Beijing, I turned to Chinese Culture Club to organize a couple of interesting activities for me.
I called their local number and spoke to a very pleasant woman with a great command of the English language, who invited me to attend one of their calligraphy classes and also pointed me to another "free" tour on a Saturday, of some other old section of Beijing, which turned out to be very interesting.
At the calligraphy class I not only learned that I am terrible at calligraphy, but I also learned a bit of the history behind some of the Chinese characters!
I also met some interesting people from Russia, France, Italy and Romania who were going to school in Beijing.
CCC is definitely worth checking out while you are in Beijing!
Cabbage
by nepalgoods
You know it is winter in Beijing, when you see all the trucks and bicycles loaded with cabbage. That will be in the middle of November.
Cabbage is a great vegetable! It has many vitamins and it can be stored on the balcony (Seems to be the main purpose for to have a balcony in Peking) for a few months in winter. Until only recently cabbage has been the only source of vitamins during winter for the Chinese.
Dongyue Temple and the Beijing Folklore Museum
by chinagazer
This taoist temple dates back to the Yuan dynasty. In the mids of a busy avenue, between office towers and shopping centers it is a haven of peace and tranquility, although its entrance looks โ to western eyes at least โ more like the entrance to a children's fun fair. The trees in the spotlessly clean garden are kept with reverence. Its has numerous ancestral halls and the God of Tai Shan is enshrined here. The small rooms around the main building show scenes from the moral code taoists live by. Everywhere in the temple and its garden people hang up red blessing cards, incense is burned and food offered.
This sounds obvious for a taoist temple. However, what makes this site so particular is that it is listed (and signposted as such from the street) as the "Beijing Folklore Museum". Indeed, the side halls in the back of the temple grounds offer a very interesting exhibition of artisanal tools and appliances used in all kinds of professions, trades and crafts, nicely documented with pictures, drawings and other graphic illustrations of past centuries. The English texts are an additional incentive to take your time for a visit here.
The combination of temple and folklore museum provides for fascinating signs and descriptions: the different scenes from the moral code are named 'departments"; another sign says that although in modern times these (religious) teachings are considered to be superstition, their previous influence on Chinese society has been important and their contribution to the contemporary Chinese culture cannot be denied.
On Chaoyangmen Dajie, just north of the Chaoyangmen metro station (one stop north of the Ancient Observatory).
Admission fee: 10 Yuan.
Art Supplies
by aukjejetty
The largest art store in Beijing selling art supplies is Gongyi Meishu Fuwubu, 200 Wangfujing Dajie, Dongcheng District (tel. 010/6512-4160). Daily from 8am to 6pm. The Liulichang Cultural Street has many small shops selling traditional artist brushes, ink stones, paper, and other art supplies.

Bla Bla bar - this is a really cool bar on the campus of Beijing Language and Culture institute. It's a little hard to find but if you ask people they'll be able to direct you. This place is packed with foreign students from all over the world, has good music, and is generally just a really cool place. It's on the second floor of a student-union type building, there's also a good sandwich shop up there and a great place to buy bootlegged CDs on the first.
