Star-Rated Toilets
by xuessium
In a bid to polish up its image after too many horrid loo jokes at their expense, the Chinese government has taken painful orchestrated effort to put an end to the butt of all jokes about their much maligned public toilets.
These days, toilets at many of the tourist sites are star-rated based on their cleanliness and lack of stench/odour. There are now teams of employees, dressed in spiffy lab coats, ensuring that these toilets meet the standards imposed by the State. The toilets are air-conditioned, washed and scrubbed clean repeatedly, sprayed with air-fresheners and even had auto-sensor installed on their taps to save water.
So maybe these toilets will be giving the Hiltons, the Hyatts and the Sheratons a run for their money in due time? (grin)
Little feet

Everybody must have heard of wrapping a girl's feet not to let them grow. I thought that this custom belonged to the distant past, but in fact we spotted a few women having such 'little feet'. Here is one of them.
the houses beside Forbidden city

well I actually find the houses beside the lake beside Forbidden City much nicer to look at and also more interesting compared to the Forbidden City which is so huge no doubt, but has repetitive structures as well ..which could be quite boring at times.
Stylish Chinese design suitable for visitors
by Saagar about Wangfujing Street, hotel shops, airport
A company called Four Colors Earth (FCE) makes long-sleeved men's Chinese modernised traditional dress. Not many clothes apart from the Mao suit makes a man here in China, but this one will.
They are all hand made, come in a varity of designs (both for men and women) and colors, and you will inevitable find something that you like. However, the size may not fit you, and this may be the only one of its kind...
I'll take a photo of one or two I have and upload it soon.
The material ranges from polyester via rayon, cotton linen, and various silk qualities, and combinations of these.
No matter which one you choose, it will draw positive comments and make people turn in appreciation. The individual designs and a captured market make these high-qulaity clothes very expensive, and you may have to pay up to 1800 Y for the finest and most refined ones.
The simple cotton ones could be down to 350-500 Y.

It's not a spot but a sort of entertainment: the BEIJING OPERA
First of all I have to point out that nothing you may associate with the word opera applies for what you can see in China.
The Beijing Opera is an interesting blend of dancing, musical dialogue and martial arts - made complete by colourful costumes and make-up. The different costumes and make-up designs all have their respective meaning: they all represent a given character (that is they tell whether someone is evil or nice).
There is REALLY nothing similar to it in Western cultire. I enjoyed it, but most people I talked to said that they could do well without seeing such a performance again. You decide, but one thing is certain: it is a must-see. None...maybe shorts are not the best idea but they will let you in regardless of what you wear as long as you wear something...:-)
