Will be in Beijing in the mid of September with my family of 4. In between, we like to travel to Xi'an from Beijing for 1.5 day. I like to know whether I can get the 'soft bed' train ticket from Beijing to Xi'an and back from the train station 2 or 3 days before the departure in the mid of September since it is expensive to book the train ticket thro' agent online. The second question is whether I can easily book a taxi (for whole day) to go to Mutianyu Great Wall, LAMA Temple, Summer Palace and Ming Tombs in 2 days. I'm able to speak chinese so I don't think I need a tour guide.
2-3 days in advance, possible. Yes, one can purchase return ticket.
But, a few factors may not be in your favour.
September is the best time to travel in China. Mid September is too near the October 1 national holiday (one of the peaks for travel). Normally, soft berth is easier than hard berth due to significant price difference. But you need four tickets and most likely you would prefer to have all four in the same cabin.
Look for plan-B to avoid the risk.
Taxi should be easy.
I might be able to help you out with the train tickets... and yes, for less than the idiotic online agencies which charge an arm and a leg!
Skip the Ming Tombs, it's out of your way and from what I hear, not worth the detour. It's commonly packaged with tours going to Badaling Great Wall, which's the most touristy part so don't go there. 1 day for Mutianyu Great Wall and Yonghegong Lamasery would be fine. For Summer Palace there's no need to hire a vehicle and driver, just take the metro to Bagou (end of line 10) and then a taxi from there.
It will be great if you can help us out for the train tickets - Z19 from Beijing to Xi'an on 15 September evening and return to Beijing Z20 on 17 September evening from Xi'an to Beijing for Soft-bert cabin for 4.
Should not be a problem. Perhaps email me at ellyse99@yahoo.com (do put "VirtualTourist" and your own username in the subject line so that I know who you are) and also CC to VTMail? My Yahoo email currently doesn't seem to be working, but I hope it should be fine in a few days.

BUN - which I believe must be one of the favourite & popular local snack. As we had it for two different meals at two different restaurants in Beijing. Hard to compare which is the best as they all taste about the same. Wherase the one near to Tiananmen Square taste better as the bun is softer.... To enjoy your food, it's best to DIY or "engaged" someone to do it for you. We got a 'professional" to make it for us as he follows a proper "procedure"!!! ;) So it was the BEST bun we ever had!!! :)
This place is interesting if you're into agriculture - and at some point we all want to know how our 'made in China' food is produced. What you see first from the road is that white large building with 'traditional roof' made of recent material and vast paved square in front of it - when we came there were no people on the square and inside there were only a few visitors. It is said there are 10 halls but at time of our visit we could saw only main hall with large photos of modern and recent agriculture - of the changing techniques, lab (hmmm... genetics) works, chain food production, farming with modern machines, growing animals and crops in large fields and production halls.
There's real socialist style sculpture of a group farmers with horse in front of the museum at the square.
No admission fee.

It's where locals shop I suppose because the prices are unbelievably! low. An entire row of shops selling women's clothing and accessories at very, very low prices. And relax, they look nothing like Mao's uniforms :) Winter clothes -- decent quality, rock bottom prices Less than US$10 for a decent jacket -- bargain!
I heard that Tian'anmen square is not open after certain time at night. However, the night before National Day, people are allowed to get in. I was there one National Day's Eve. There were so crazily many people already when I got there at 3.50am. Also a lot of journalists. Everybody was going to see the raise of the flag in early morning. And interestingly, I noticed there were a lot of soilders there too. They stood still in a line for hours. I guessed they were trying to seperate people from moving around too much by standing like a wall.
