off-the-beaten-track ideas??
by Kellylynn734
I'll be in Beijing for a week and plan to do all the great historical sites. However, I'm interested in doing things more off-the-beaten-track... any ideas?? Any places near Beijing that I could take a bus or train to (not too far, I'm trying to see the most that I can without sitting on a train for hours!).
ANY ideas would be helpful!!
Thanks :)

Two ideas
The Great Wall at Simatai - it is 3hrs drive from Beijing but well worth the effort as it is probably the most rugged and unpreserved of the wall areas. I have heard that it may be closed at present - check out http://www.greatwallforum.com/
Go to see the 'Legend of Kung Fu' show - I am not a fan of martial arts but this show is far more than that. www.legendofkungfu.com

Thanks! That part of the wall is closed but the Kung Fu show sounds interesting!

Kelly,
Did you actually look at the Kung Fu link? There's nothing there but commercial links not related to Beijing at all.

I saw that but found a working link to it through the hostel I'm staying at.
Travel Tips for Beijing
Beautiful October weather
by SLLiew
I went to Beijing in October and weather was perfect. It can be bitterly cold in winter, hot in summer and there is the dust storms. So if you have a choice, choose the month of travel.
Of course, each weather season is a different experience. Just do as the Beijingers do when in Beijing.
Hot Pot Dinner.
by Guantanamera
We had a fantastic traditional Chinese dinner of hot pot... This dinner features a central container of boiling hot water in which you can dip and cook slices of meat... Delicious!
One of the golden rules of travel... The locals always no best where to go for great dining experiences!
Electricity of 220 V and other useful informations

As usual for travelling: light and practical. You might buy suitcases in China, they are producing the things for the rest of the world. High Heels during the day are very uncomfortable, the streets are sandy because of the wind from the western desert. Be careful with fruits on the street and with water in some regions. I prefered mineral water for my tooth brush. You can by film material of all big producers like Kodak. If there is a possibility to print CD ì`m not sure. But as Beijing is a modern city, this might be avialable at several places. I haven`t seen a camping ground. Compare to the region you stay, there are adapters of 2 or 3 flatsicks necessary. An international switch-set is useful.

Universities:
You'll probably get to see a Beijing University - the library is really famous and there's a fabulous Chinese art museum there (the Sachler - the other Sachler Museum is part of the Smithsonian institute in Washington, D.C.); you'll likely get a very enthusiastic student tour guide through as well.
Tsinghua is another of China's best schools. It was originally funded by the Americans at the turn of the century to train students in engineering, sciences and math. It's a beautiful campus and very western in feel.
This picture is from Tsinghua.
Karaoke in Beijing
by bhemak about ?
You can go to western bars in Beijing or anywhere in China for that matter and have a good time, but it isn't the way most locals do it. China like much of East Asia loves karaoke.
This is what to do. Grab some friends, the more the better. Try to grab a few Chinese if you know some or befriend them (it could happen) and head to the nearest karaoke palace. The are everywhere. You can read the English part of the sign that say 'KTV', thats the place.
Inside you and you friends will have a private room. You order drinks and usually food. Yell your lungs out, you'll only be embarassed in front of friends, not strangers (which might be worse).
It's a good time for most.
