Travel Tips for Beijing

Famous temples

by nepalgoods

There are so many temples in this city! Their discription you'll find in any guidebook. My favourite temple is the Lama-Temple. It is the main temple of the Panchen Lama in Beijing. It is busy with monchs, worshippers and tourists. The air is full of the smell of incense and the noice of the bells.

BEIJINGERS

by ancient_traveler

Beijingers enjoy chatting, taking their caged birds out in the parks, gardening, raising gold fish, window shopping and playing cards and mahjong. In recent years, an increasing number of Beijingers have become soccer fans. Young people love pop and rock music.

The Badaling Great Wall is the...

by l_joo

The Badaling Great Wall is the place to visit but expect it a very commercialize spot. This place has thousands of tourist daily making it another money making idea for the local peoples. There are souvenir shops as usual, camels, taxi, buses, toilets and the most important is the certificate cost 40 yuan after you climb up there but still a very interesting, beautiful place to see.

The "new" Lido market

by mke1963 about The "new" Lido market

After some time spent shuffling around from place to place, many of the traders who used to be in the old Lido market opposite the Lido Hotel, most of the traders have now settled on the Sunny Gold Street Market around the corner from the old market - 100 metres to the lights and turn right; it's in that block. You really can't miss it.

The advantage of this specific market is that it tends to be cheaper than the Silk Market. Lido is close to where there is a very large population of expats who buy things frequently, so there is not the automatic assumption that you are a tourist - prices start lower and (in my humble opinion) the quality feels that much better than down the Trash Market...errr sorry, the Silk Market. Chinese porcelain and handicrafts - if they make it it's here; if you describe it, it'll be here next week. Fake brand clothing of atrocious quality, fake brand shoes that will wear out before you next need to clean your teeth, fake sunglasses that will likely cause serious long-term eye damage, fake DVDs that will run OK until the last 15 minutes (if the end of the story isn't important, this may be acceptable to you). Some good Chinese clothing and games. Less than at the Silk Market, in general. It largely depends on you.

TRANS-MONGOLIAN RAILWAY

by swesn

The Trans-Mongolian Train that departs from Beijing to Ulaan Baator in Mongolia now leaves only on Saturdays. If the schedule fits you, go to the China International Travel Service (CITS) office at Hotel Intercontinental on Jianguomennei Dajie, near the Beijing Zhan subway station on the Circle Line and between Dong Dan and Jianguomen subway stations on the East-West Line to buy your ticket.

If not, your alternative route is to take the daily sleeper bus to Erenhot (the border town in Inner Mongolia) from a bus-station on the Third Ring Road on the west-southern end, on Xisanhuan Nanlu near the Feng Tai District. You need to ask tour agencies for more information and how to write the characters of the name of the bus-station and where to get off.

Sleeper bus to Erenhot costs around Y100. At the border, you need to pay between Y70 to Y100 for a minivan or jeep to take you across to Zamy-Uud in Mongolia.

It is VERY IMPORTANT that you go for MONGOLIAN drivers as Chinese drivers are rogues!

Once in Zamy-Uud, the daily train to Ulaan Baator leaves at 5pm and for the cheapest hard-sleeper (with no blankets or bed-sheets), it costs only US$4 for the 13-or-so hour ride. Very culturally shocking but wonderful memorable experience!
