Experience the real Beijing

by Helga67

To experience an authentic Beijing we would like to stay in a hotel or hostel in a Hutong. Hutongs are narrow alleys formed by lines of traditional courtyard residences like in the old China.

Some hotels/hostels that we will take into consideration:
Beijing Hao Yuan Hotel
Tianxiang Courtyard Hotel
Red lantern Hostel
SIHE Courtyard Hotel

If you look at the Beijing Travel Guide here on VT, under restaurants, you can possibly find the information you need. As some of the tips are a bit dated, you might wish to re-post a question on any particular restaurant that catches your fancy. You might ask if you need to order this entree ahead of your dining time. I know in Germany, at several restaurants, you had to order the day before. Gary

I usually recommend Da Dong, they have 2 outlets both of which are located close to metro stops.
You have my email address, email me if you want the Chinese characters for the address for those 2 outlets.

Price is generally around 200 RMB/duck. At least 2 people to share.

Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant at Hepingmen.
Address: No. 14, Qianmen West Street, Beijing, P.R.China
The duck there is the best! Last year,we spent 2 weeks in Beijing and Shanghai. Our travel plan included tasting Beijing Roast duck, so the guide brought us to Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant at Hepingmen. The price was not too high. I loved the duck skin there. It melted as soon as i put it in my mouth. Well, hope you enjoy there.

Travel Tips for Beijing

Calligraphy is a special art and seems to be highly appreciated! It has a long history and has been performed for more than 1500 years!

We saw this man at the Summer Palace - doing calligraphy with water!!

The Underground City.

by vic&michael

We were taken on a whirlwind tour of the Underground City by a young soldier. It is rather hard to find despite having it on the Lonely Planet guide map. Look out for a simple door with a small sign. It is amazing to see that they have built an underground city by hand. The tunnels link up to Tian'an Men Square, and the Forbidden City, and the Temple of Heaven. Also, all the other cities in China have got underground cities.

Underground Cities were made when China was under the threat of invasion from Russia. The one in Beijng can hold 30,000 people. Huge. But there are 4 million people in Beijing? What happens to all the rest? Who gets to go underground and be safe? Who dies? Lucky there's no threat from Russia anymore.

Actually, I found the tour (or more accurately, fast walk) a little boring. Learning about the fact that Beijing has an underground city and what it was meant for was more interesting than visiting it. Cold, dark, damp, large, and a very fast tour by an unimpressed guide. THey also lead you through a souviner shop that is underground...

TEAHOUSE

by Chris_Dahlia about TEAHOUSE

In old Beijing, there were many teahouses like the one immortalized in Laoshe's play 'Teahouse'. They were ideal places for people to meet, drink and enjoy a performance by a storyteller or a traditional Chinese musician. And today, it is still THERE!
