Weather in Beijing in March?

by HispanicYob

Is it cold around March? I'll be in Beijing and Shanghai for 9 days in late March. What should I pack? Jackets necessary?

You could find historical weather averages on MSN Weather.
You'll definitely need a coat of some kind, but which kind would depend on when exactly you're coming.

This picture was taken in March at Badaling (just north of Beijing). This gives you an idea of what we were wearing at the time.

There was snow on the Great Wall in mid-March last year. I wouldn't go to Beijing around that time without a jacket.

Travel Tips for Beijing

Entering the Forbidden City

by cheapskate

Beijing has gone from being an ancient capital to a modern capital. The old remains as many new changes are evolving. This is very much a city of contrasts, and i love it! The Forbidden City is something you absolutely would not miss out when you are in Beijing. It is an architectural spectacular and wonder. It is HUGE.. and before even entering the main compound would already leave you in awe. Why so? There are several outer gates (5 i think) that surrounds the palace, each quite far apart from another. Having a horse, then, to get around the palace quickly was quite indispensible. :) Lucky for the emperor, he had servants to carry him around!

visit the summer home of the Qing emperors - the SUMMER PALACE (so aptly named) or in Chinese, 'Yi He Yuan'.

This is one of Beijing's finest sights and believe me, it is immensely huge. This site had long been a royal garden and was considerably enlarged by the famous Emperor Qian Long (pronounced as 'Chian Long') in the 18th century. What he did was to deepen and expand the beautiful KUNMING LAKE (yup, that's the one in the picture)... In winter, the lake becomes frozen and people would gather here at this spot to ice-skate....

Ice skating with big feet

by mafi_moya

Living mostly in hot countries where ice is simply something to cool drinks down, I was eager to go ice skating in Beijing. There are a handful of indoor ice rinks around the city, and in the winter the lakes freeze over and many people take to the ice and go skating. You can hire skates or bring your own, and if you're not too confident then the outdoor lake rinks offer a sit-down sledge-like version with sticks to push yourself along.

So, anyway, off I went to the ice rink in the main shopping centre at Xidan (there's another in the World Trade Centre). They gave me the biggest pair of skates they had in the building (about UK size 9!) - I tried desperately to cram my feet into them but gave up and went to the pub instead. If you've got big feet, bring your own skates.

Hongqiao Market (Pearl Market)

by ValbyDK about Hongqiao Market (Pearl Market)

Hongqiao Market (Pearl Market) is located very close to the Temple of Heaven Park. You can buy anything there... electronic equipments, clothes, shoes, jewellery, sunglasses... you name it - they got it...

I cannot tell you what price is the right one - but it's not the first you're told. Walk away from the shop, come back later, bargain - you know what to do...

In the basement floor there is a big fish and food market. You might see some strange things there.

Beijing by Night

by ahoerner about Tiananmen by Night

After visiting the main touristic places during the day, reserve some time for Tiananmen at night.

The lights of the government buildings as well as of the Mao Mausoleum are kind of inspiring...
