China Tours
by ozpaul
Hi - just wondering if anyone has used ChinaTour.net? We want to do a day tour of the Great Wall and Tianamen Square. Are tours of this type easy to arrange in Beijing? Many thanks.

You can do this on your own with a guide book, but I have taken the tour also and they are good for the ride. Some of the speaker guides were hard to understand, but there are many tours with many different prices...all good. Arrange at a tour agency or the front desk at the hotel, they will direct you to the tour office or conceirge. Enjoy China Cheers Tommy x Check out the VT pages on China before you go
Travel Tips for Beijing
Wangfujing Dajie
by Paul2001
I stayed just a half a block from Wangfujing Dajie, so naturally I walked through this, most famous of Beijing's shopping streets, quite often. To be honest I am not much a shopper but, I did enjoy strolling up and down the boulevard early in the evening. Mostly what you find along this street are shops selling watches, clothing(with many knock offs) and large departments stores. Of course there are the usual fast food places here to. Unfortunately it is saturated with the three "H's"(husslers, hasslers and hookers) at night. They get quite annoying after a while. The neon lights of the various shops and department stores are quite bright and make for an interesting picture. Wangfujing Dajie is also a great place to people watch as there is such a great mix of foriegn tourists and locals.

Climb the Great Wall
I went to the part of the Great Wall at Pada Ling. You can get a certificate with a polaroid photo certifying that you have climbed the Great Wall or changed into costumes and ride on a camel there. But all these were too cheezy for me.
Don't pack too much!!!
by egosyncratix
Bring minimal if you are a student.....leave space for shopping if you are a tourist! If you are a tourist, bring ENOUGH. if you are a student, bring as little as possible....everything is SO CHEAP here!!!! Bring LOTS!!! when you go travelling, you will need toilet paper or tissue. for those who are olfactory inclined, you may want to bring a mask. As for medication, you may wanna bring your complete set unless you wanna be stuck with some chinese medicine... Dunno about these, but my digital cam is good enough. Not much of a beach here in Beijing and i would not recommend you go swimming in the public pools either. Bring good shoes. The soles here suck! Bring RMB or convertibles.
Fake CD/VCD/DVD....
by Sally_chen
I shouldn't encourage you to buy these fake stuff. However, this is the favourite place for my Eurepean colleagues, I thought some of you may like to shop here .
There is a small video store (I don't think they have a name) easily to be found. Right next to the MTR station of World Trade Centre (The other side of the road). There is a bus stations in front of this store.
You can find all the update DVD/VCD at price from 15 to 25 . Most of them are good quality.
Nessun Dorma at the Huguang Guild Hall
by calcaf38 about Peking Opera
I was almost tempted to enter this tip under the category "tourist traps", but still, it wasn't all bad.
I love opera, and I was ready to love Peking opera. I was warned not to go to some modern theater, so I went to the historic and gorgeous Huguang Guild Hall.
At Y280, it was expensive (for Beijing, not for the MET!). The show that night was "Monkey King Makes Trouble In The Dragon Palace". There were no girl roles at all. I guess Monkey King is the Chinese Billy Budd!
The audience was very sparse, and we were given tea and little snacks.
The show was great. Mostly acrobatics and percussion, with hardly any singing at all.
As I was starting to get into it, it was over! And opera has the reputation of being too long! Quick curtain calls were immediately followed by the staff clearing the cups and nutshells in a hurry.
When I look at the website of Huguang Guild, Monkey King is usually given with another piece. But that night, I was a bit shortchanged.
Questions and Answers
Q: Tour "We are group of 3 kiwi students with 2.5 full days to explore in Beijing on a budget. Want to see the 'must do's' great..."
A: "Two and a half days would be enough for what you mentioned. You won't need a tour for visiting these places except Great Wall. If you choose Badaling section, you can do..."
