Beijing-Shanghai day train
by frankspurs
Regarding the Beijing to Shanghai daytime train, how is the scenery?

Not much to look.
If you are a fan of train traveling, some routes in southwest china (Sichuan and Yunnan province) are pretty special, just like Geo parks. and QingHai-Tibet railway too, it is quite unique.

I'm not overly interested in spectacular scenery, but just getting a look at everyday life in China. Passing through small towns and cities, seeing farmers work the land.

It is suitable for you if you just want some everyday life view. But some of the trains are very fast and do not stop at small town. You should take car of this when you choose train.

Most small cities in mainland China look similar! Personally I'd just take the overnight option.
Travel Tips for Beijing
serene and fascinating
by piglet44
We enjoyed our morning at the Temple of Heaven, which we found beautiful and relaxing.
There were people picnicking in the grounds, and some people playing strange one-stringed instruments and singing. It was a great experience. You can get there by subway very easily. For us it was two stops from our hotel near Chongwenmen. Don't remember the name of the station. But just get the hotel to write the name of the Temple down in Chinese, and when you get out the subway show it to people. You will find it easily.
After that we went on to to Pearl Market which is walking distance , and decided to return at the end of our trip to do shopping there..
TIANAMEN SQUARE
by LysDor
The world largest square is located on the opposite side of the gate of the forbidden city. It is famous because of Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, which has free admission. Unfortunately this square has also been the settings -during the past years - for different political reasons.
Moist Towelettes are you friend
by jeanie95tt
Bring some moist towlettes (the kind you get in barbeque and hot wings restaurants, example brand - Wet Ones) since there is not always soap available in public restrooms. They also make good face/skin wipes. You can also bring some hand sanitizer (example brand - Purell). Don't forget toilet paper when you go out! Also, bring some insect spray to keep the bugs off.

HUTONGS
A hutong is an ancient city alley or lane typical in Beijing, where hutongs run into the several thousand. Surrounding the Forbidden City, many were built during the Yuan (1206-1341), Ming(1368-1628) and Qing(1644-1908) dynasties. In the prime of these dynasties the emperors, in order to establish supreme power for themselves, planned the city and arranged the residential areas according to the etiquette systems of the Zhou Dynasty.
Changes of Houhai Lake Area
by vitraleus about Houhai Lake Area
Houhai Lake is connected to Beihai Park. When I was a kid, I used to go to the park a lot and never noticed the Houhai Lake area, not even the bars. But nowadays, Houhai Lake has become so popular that young people just like to hang around there for the weekends.
Compared to another hot bar area Sanlitun bar street, Houhai Lake area to me is just pushed into a bar area. It lacked of its nature and pushed to "install" a character to itself. But Houhai Lake area is a great place to visit in the afternoon. It's so much relaxing just sitting in a bar beside the lake reading a book in an afternoon.
I don't like to go there in the evening. But during winter, people go there for skating. Casual. People go there don't have very good taste of dressing. So don't worry about it. :P
