The service levels at the Kempinski are extraordinary.
I must admit when I first arrived I was a bit thrown by the delay in checking me in. Although I had a reservation, it seemed that the hotel while overbooked in my particular category did not seem to have a way to easily and quickly take care of the situation. This was frustrating as this occurred at 10pm at night after a long 20 hour trip from Chicago via Tokyo. The check-in process took close to :45 minutes. At the conclusion of such I was given a hotel on one of the Executive Floors - albeit at a slightly higher rate.
It was what happened next that turned the entire experience around: The following morning I had a hand-written note of apology from the Hotel Manager delivered under my door with a gift certificate enclosed in the attached envelope. The explanation for the wait was now made clear - the computers had failed shortly before my arrival and the staff - in the middle of a shift change were trying to reconcile what was available.
Now a bit regarding the hotel: The location (Northeast part of the city) is good for those who require to be near the Diplomatic district. There is also ample shuttle service available for those who need to get into the city.
This hotel definitely caters to the European clientele and is much more of a Business Traveller's type however those with a higher end budget for travel should also give the Kempinski a good consideration.
The hotel has the usual amenities expected of a high end chain. For a good cup (although expensive) of jasmine tea - try the lobby tea room! Great for people watching! Excellent pool on top floor.
Executive floor breakfast facilities were top notch! I know I gained a few pounds during my week long stay there!

Travel Guide needed in Beijing and areas of Shandong
by SailorJackson
We'll be in Beijing and various places in Shandong in spring 2011. I have my own Chinese business partner for the travel, but I'd like to find a additional travel companion who can take my wife off to interesting places while I go to trade shows, factories, and business meetings. It will be about 10 days in April.
I'd appreciate any suggestions of where we can find someone with experience and references.
Thanks,
SailorJackson

In China you need to have a licenced guide, if you hire one. Tour guides that deal directly with the tourists are illegal in China. They have to work through an agency or tour operator. This site lets you in on a multitute of guides all over China.

Read the rules here on this site for better understanding.

Things have changed a lot, since I started doing tours to China, - (right after Nixon put his food in the door), when tourist services were spectacularly inept. Today however travel services in China are friendly and professional for most part. Have fun, when not working.....d:o)
Travel Tips for Beijing
Yi-He-Yuan (The Summer Palace)...
by vigi
Yi-He-Yuan (The Summer Palace) The best kept existing imperial garden. The Kunming lake occupies most of the entire park, with the famous 17-Arch Bridge (I couldn't count 17 anyway). The palace is divided into 3 parts: Political (meeting rooms), Living and Landscape browsing.
A MUST have!

Military Museum
by nepalgoods
Normally I don't like military museums and exhibitions of wars and weapons. But I went to the Military Museum because of a special exhibition and then visited the normal exhibitions, too. This museum exhibits weapons from stone age to modern times. It is very impressive to see all this early inventions of bombs, fireworks and ancient shooting machines.
The museum is not far from the TV-Tower and a nice park.
