Getting from Xingang to the Silk Market and the Pearl Market
by 1Donna
We will be arriving in Xingang on a cruise ship in April and was wondering if anyone can suggest the best way to travel from the cruise terminal to the Pearl Market and the Silk Market. Is it feasible to travel by taxi or are there buses at the dock to take visitors to places of interest? We have done the Great Wall etc. last year but would welcome any suggestions of other places to visit while there. Many thanks for your help

The port is actually in a sub-district of Tianjin city, which's NOT Beijing city. I presume the Pearl Market and Silk Market you're talking about are in Beijing.
You might want to take a taxi from the cruise terminal to Tianjin train station, hop on one of the numerous C trains (30 mins journey time, 58/69 RMB each way for 2nd/1st-class seats) to Beijing South train station. From there you could take a taxi to your next destination, or at least to the nearest metro stop.
Where exactly have you gone last year? What are your sightseeing interests and preferences?

Alternately there are similar markets in Tianjin city, no need to hike all the way to Beijing (the new high speed trains are fun though). Pearl/Silk Markets are overrated, now quality are bad and prices are not that great. Plus lots of upgrade in Tianjin becasue of the Olympics worth checking out!

Besides the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Tian'anmen Square and Summer Palace are also well worth seeing in Beijing. I knew a chinese guide recommended by my friend when I was in Beijing at the beginning of this year, he can design an excellent itinerary. and I keep his mail:jason04722009@hotmail.com, if you need a guide when you are in Beijing, Maybe you can contact with him. Hoping you can enjoy your trip in China.
Travel Tips for Beijing
Lama temple
by filipdebont
I had never thought that there was a lamasery (Lama temple) in Beijing.
As we were travelling towards Tibet with its many Buddhist cloisters and temples, it was kind of surprising to see this here.
But it was great to visit and to admire this culture and religion.
And all this with the greatest respect for the local believers which came here to offer some incense and to pray. The Lama temple
Art of spitting
by Gard
We soon discovered that coughing up great wads of spit is a natural part of the everyday life in Beijing. I’m not sure if people cough and spit because of the air pollution or because they have a lot of dust being blown in from the deserts in the north. It seems like there is quite a lot of downfall in Beijing. I read somewhere that an average big city gets about 8 tons of downfall pr square kilometre but Beijing gets about 18 tons. Well, I can tell you that it is noticeable…some days when I blew my nose the tissue ended up kinda dirty…I shall not go into more details :-)
Hutongs
by Kuznetsov_Sergey
The Heart of the Chinese capital - narrow streets which are referring on-chinese "hutong". They are characteristic for ancient city architecture. The majority of streets are constructed in days of board of a Yuan dynasty.
Last years there were also usual for us city buildings, but in the old city the untouched corner of ancient imperial Pekin was kept. Traditional Chinese houses with square court yard are restricted along streets - "hutongs"/
Chinese Chopsticks
by Lemonita about Yunhong Chopstick Shop
There are a lot of varieties of chopsticks, made from different kind of material and of different colors.
I bought chopsticks for a friend who was getting married, I got her a pair that looked like bambou ( the wood was made to look like a bambou, there is nothing painted on them). I thought they were very elegant. Moreover, it came with chopsticks holder and a nice box.
You can also buy the whole set (for 10 people). If you don't intend to spend so much, there are very simple looking chopsticks for 18 RMB (10 pairs). Prices vary following the style and wood of the chopsticks. You can get 2 pairs of nice chopsticks for 70 RMB. Simple ones (the more practical ones) cost around 20 RMB for 10 pairs.

Located to the south of the Zhao Long Hotel on the East Third Ring Road, Beijing HOF Brauhaus is a high class restaurant with an exotic atmosphere. It offers home-brewed beer, Bavarian specialities and Cantonese seafood.
There were many bars, restaurants and karaoke bars along this road.
