Beijing Tour with the Elderly
by maliziyya
Hi.. My 80-year old father wish to visit Beijing including the Great Wall.We are from Malaysia. He still can walk and his health is quite in good condition but tire easily due to his age, therefore we plan to put him on a wheelchair. He can't stand cold weather but we plan to go in August or September, but my brother said that the weather must be cold by then. Anyone can advice us on how best to bring our father for the tour?Thank you

Beijing was still warm when we went in September 2009. It was only 'just' starting to get chill at night, so there shouldn't be a problem for you if you go in August or early September. As for the Great Wall, I don't recall seeing any wheelchairs up on the wall (!), but there were gondola lifts up to the wall which he could handle and then he can sit and view the wall while you explore it. I brought my 72 year old mother, but after one misplaced step (and there are many up there!), she put her hip out for the rest of our journey, so really consider which section of the Great Wall you wish to take him to. Perhaps leave the Great Wall for the last thing you do on your visit?

Seeing the wall - I think you will be fine, but walking on the wall, that is another story. At Badaling, the best way I can describe the Wall is a series of very steep steps with and extremely high spacing.
Those ancient Chinese soldiers patrolling the wall must have been in very good condition, as the part of the wall we climbed was challenging when we were there some 13 years ago.

The piece we are standing on in the image was just about the only flat part (and you had to climb up stairs to get there!).

I would also suggest the Badaling section of the wall for your father. But even the less steep places can be treacherous with uneven paving.

Goodness, which Beijing was your brother talking about? With a range of 21-30 degrees Celsius in August and 16-26 degrees Celsius in September, I would certainly not consider it cold. That's summer! And in August, extremely hot and humid!

Hi,
I have been to the Badaling section and I think it will be quite difficult to go there with a wheelchair, because like it was already said, the fllor is verz uneven and you have very steep sections and stairs inbetween. The Touristarea around the Badalingsection will be no problem, but the Wall itsself, due to mentioned aspects. You already have to climb stairs in order to get on the wall. In addition to that it is very likely to be crowded. When I went there our small group chose the less crowded part, but there were stairs you had to crawl up because they were from 30-40 cm high.
Nevertheless I hope you will find a way to get on the great wall and hope you guys will have a lot of fun. ;)
Travel Tips for Beijing
Beef Noodle/ Yang Chun Mien/Pekking Duck
by Applelyn
You must try the Yang Chun Mien with beef. A very large portion for a gal so you can try to share. But it is a very simple dish with excellent taste. You can get it anywhere--even roadside stalls have them.
Pekking Duck--You must go to the famous restaurant that just sell it...Let me recall then update again...Or you can ask around. The skin is so crispy and the spring onion is fresh. Coated with special sauce and wheat skin...it is just unforgettable The snow flakes.....My first sighting of snow....short, abt 5 mins...but unforgettable....I miss the Beef Noodle :(
TEMPLE OF HEAVEN...
by LysDor
...and HALL OF PRAYER
This masterpiece was built between 1406 and 1420. It´s a huge place where the Emperor used to communicate directly with Heaven. Several times a year, he would come here on foot all the way from the Forbidden City to pray for good harvests, enough rain, and so on...
The construction is based around the number nime which is divine in Chinese numerology. The round altar is where the Emperor was reporting on the status of the country to Heaven. It is constructed so that standing in the middle anything said is amplified several times.
The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is interesting because of its 38-meters-tall building which doesn´t have any single nail.
The original one burnt down in 1889 but has been reconstructed since.
If You go to the temple early in the morning You can see groups of people practicing all types of kung fu and taiji

Beijing - albeit photogenic - is rather heavily polluted and you shouldn't expect blue sky and sunshine too often. Choose your film accordingly. Lonely Planet's new book on Beijing (ISBN 1-86450-144-8) was published in January 2001. I've found it quite useful and so would you I guess.
Quite a Climb, but worth it
by keeweechic
There are some very steep descents on the wall but there are also hand rails for assistance. Unless you are adventurous,it is better to go to the restored parts of the Wall (as with Badaling).
Mutianyu is supposed to be the most scenic section of the Wall in the Beijing area.
Let's Salsa!!
by AC1 about Latino
Well... this is one helluva place for Latin dancing. If you are into the salsa, this is the place for you. Generous dance floor are, reasonable priced drinks, good crowd, live band from Latin American... what are you waiting for? :) Casual. There is a cloak room for your winter jacket.

A: "Two and a half days would be enough for what you mentioned. You won't need a tour for visiting these places except Great Wall. If you choose Badaling section, you can do..."
