Take a lonelyplanetguide with you, the newest one is from August 2002. A good guide is more important here than in western countries, because of the fast pace of change. There are new guesthouses popping up everywhere. Also still new places to discover. I went to Pingyao in 2000, which was not in the Lonely Planet then, but it is now.
