A real SAUNA
I would recommend this hotel! The location of the hotel is quite good and the subway station is near.
Unique Quality: You can find a real SAUNA there!!

Dirty Hotel
The staff were very friendly and the restaurant was very good, but the bedrooms needed cleaned and redecorating. The bathroom was filthy, grouting round the bath and shower was black, the washhand basin was never cleaned round the taps was thick with dirt. The floor needed a good scrub, we were there for 3 days after a cruise and I would say I have never stayed in a dirtier hotel. We did report it and offered to pay for an upgrade just to get a clean room but we were told the hotel was full.
Unique Quality: With only having 3 days in Beijing we spent the time sightseeing which we thoroughly enjoyed we would have liked to have had a few more days. I cannot comment on the pool as we did not use it and we certainly did not have any great views from our room.

Gloria Plaza Hotel
I stayed here for a month during a school trip to China. Good service and an amazing breakfeast buffet! Not too far from Tien An Men, just a couple of stops with the subway. The station was right across the street. The Friendship Store was a couple of blocks away, and a lot of nice restaurants in the neighboorhood :)
The bedlinen was kind of itchy though, but the room was spacious with a great view down to the Jianguomen.
Unique Quality: The hotel has a spa/hair salon, pool, several restaurants, giftshop and laundry service.

Beijing's Gloria Plaza Hotel
American bucks get you a four star hotel at discount prices. No joke. I think I spent about $60 a night and got a king size bed, a great view, a nice area with a couch and a couple of chairs.
The rooms are very nice. The webpage has a good look at one. They are very spacious and comfortable. The A/C was good. It kept me cool even though it was a very hot day. Plus, they gave me complementary breakfast and bottles of water. There is a KFC and a McDonalds across the street, but this is China, so eat at one of the local joints around the corner. Or, the Hard Rock cafe is a ten minute ride by taxi.
This is my favorite hotel in China. The service was way above what I got in Hong Kong or Shanghai. Cheaper too!
Unique Quality: The Sports City Cafe is a sports bar to the extreme. The tour guide I befriended lost to me at a game of basketball on the court in the middle of the bar. It is totally geared towards the West, but locals come there too.
In addition to that, there is a formal dining area, and breakfast is served on each floor.
There is a gym, a pool, Sauna, Beauty Salon, Massage Centre and separate lounges equipped with televisions for ladies and gentlemen. Travel and business facilities are also there. They can arrange airport transfer, tours of the city (and great wall) and even hook you up with plane tickets.
There is a subway stop across the street, and a direct route west will lead you to the Palace Museum and Tienanmen Square. Great location!

Gloria Plaza Hotel, No 2...
Gloria Plaza Hotel, No 2 Jiangnomennan Avenue 100022 Beijing
Lobby - Satisfactory Rooms - Large enough but basic. Room Amenities - No ironing board; iron provided by chambermaid was broken and leaking. Breakfast - Sufficient spread but not sumptious. Service - Some staff are just indifferent and hardlt smiles. Indoor pool - from the brochures, didnt check out actual place.

Anyone want to meet up for drinks?
by nine5dob8
Hello,
My friend and I will be stopping by Beijing for 3-4 days from November 26, I believe. We're going to be staying at the Gloria Plaza Hotel. If any fellow travelers will be there during that time, or if any locals want to meet up and show two lost travelers (we're both working professionals in our early 30s) where the night life is at in Beijing, please drop me a line. My Yahoo email is lanterna_magicus@yahoo.com. Thanks in advance!

there is not a lot of night life at such a cold windy winter.
1. Sanlitun, bar street, full of hookers 2. Houhai, bar street, it's nice and alone with a small lake 3. Wudaokou, full of foreign student who study Chinese there, there are some nice bar 4.the west entrance of the Chaoyang park, bar street
Sanlitun is the most famous one.
hope u can find what u want at bj. have a nice trip

Wang Yang,
Thanks for the advice. We will definitely give Houhai a try as the idea of enjoying the atmosphere of a bar by the lake on a cold winter sounds wonderful!

Not much of a night life????? Huh???? Oh please!!!!!
Alex, when you arrive get hold of one of the free magazines from the lobby of a hotel (or check on the web for That's Beijing, City Weekend or Beijing Today) and take your pick. This city is teeming with people in the evenings, from one corner to the other. Houhai is good, but better are the many, many bars in the side streets to the East of the Drum Tower. Check out the bars in Haidian near the universities, or join in one of the club activities advertised. The area around the Gloria Plaza is a bit quiet but you are not far from some good, buzzing nightlife. You may have time to get to some of the good bars in Sanlitun Nanjie before they are all finally demolished - just weeks away now, and many have already gone!

Thanks for your helpful advice Mark, especially for your detailed and informative travel pages here on VT! Probably saved us a whole lot of time and disappointment searching blindly. Will definitely try the Shanghai Museum and M on the Bund as you've recommended on your Shanghai pages. Also enjoyed your pics. You have quite an envious job that allows for so much traveling. Looking forward to reading more on your pages here on VT.
