Can anyone tell me about Beijing Grand Metropark Hotel, If you stayed there? What type of food is on there breakfast buffet? What is close to this hotel. Will be staying there in April and will have a little free time, would like to walk around and was wondering what is close by. Is it safe to walk around area in the evening? Because of food allergys will be looking to buy from a grocery store, is there one close by.
hmmm... I was hoping for some replies too! We will be at this hotel in May, it is one of our tour hotels. I've never taken a tour before, but figured it would be easier to see a lot of China on one. We're going with China Spree. I checked Trip Advisor and saw two comments -- one loved it as a business hotel, the other hated it because it was not near any of the major sights. I'm expecting the cities in China will be much larger than we are used to visiting, and that being with a tour, such distances won't be as important to us as they might be as an independent traveler.
We are also using China Spree, what tour are you doing? Also are you flying out of New York?

Dominating Jade Islet on the lake is the White Pagoda (can you see it in the pic?), a 36-meter high monument shaped like a peppermint bottle! Incidentally this monument was built over 450 years ago...

THE CHANNELS
Around the Forbidden City you can find a very quiet area with nice channels and old buildings, that reminds sometimes to Venice and its channels. It's a nice walk around after the rushing ambiance of the rest of the town.
“Sin Dong Yeng” night market, this section sells the same stuff as the food area in Wangfujing except these are all street vendors, smoke aroma filled the street with BBQ lamb, chicken, pork, squire, crickets etc…
Beijing is a city of bicycles. Everywhere you go, a sea of bikes can always be encountered. One of the most amazing sights I have seen are swarm of bikes going one direction in an intersection meeting another and they just seem to sieve through each other with no collisions. How? I don't know. For a real thrill, go to Saigon and watch them do the same with motorcycles!
