Beijing to Changsha/Huaiha
by Peaudusoie
Can someone tell me which is the easiest way to get from Beijiing to Huaiha?
Is it necessary to stop in Changsha or could I get a train from Beijiing to Huaiha?
Alternatively, is it better to fly to Huaiha? What are the possible costs? any other ways to get there?
Thanks for any information

Hi. Do you mean Huaihua? I'm afraid there is no a city called Huaiha in China. Some trains runs between Beijing and Huaihua, but they take you at least 20 hours. Or you can take a non-stop train Z17 to Changsha, only 11 hours, then
take a bus to Huaihua, about 4 hours. There is no airport in Huaihua. You can fly to Changsha, then to Huaihua. If you can tolerate the possible vapidity on the train, choose the first way, or consider the later two according to your budget.

Thank you for your reply.
Also thanks for the correction on the spelling of Huaihua. The wrong spelling must be the reason why I could hardly get information online.
Will consider the options you presented.

Beijing West -- Huaihua trains:
K267 (1220--1405) 25h45min
K471/K474 (1357--1850) 28h53min
T87 (1556--1423) 22h27min
T61 (1650--1439) 21h49min
1217/1220 (2216--0018) 26h02min
Or, the fastest way by train would probably be...
Beijing West -- Changsha fastest train: Z17 (1816--0721) 13h05min
Changsha -- Huaihua fastest train: T87 (0812--1423) 6h11min
You do shave a couple of hours off...

Travel Tips for Beijing
Pollution and lack of blue skies
by meteorologist1
There are not many blue sky days in Beijing or many big cities in China. The air is definitely not clean in Beijing. There's a lot of dust flying around. Pollution from automobiles is adding to the problem. Be careful if you have respiratory problems. In recent years the climate in Beijing has become harsher: Hot and humid summers (sometimes can get above 40C; and/or >35C for 10 days straight) and cold and snowy winters.
Picture taking
by Gard
It should be pretty common with western tourists in Beijing these days. But in the Forbidden City, a guy came over to me and said something about taking a picture. I thought he wanted me to take a picture of him and his friend but it turned out that he wanted to take a picture of me and his friend. Another day while I was walking in a shopping mall I saw two girls and one of them had a camera. All of a sudden I was in the background of the picture and I tried to hurry up because I didn’t want to ruin their picture. But then all of a sudden the girls shifted position and once again I was in the background of the picture. So I went over to them and asked them if they wanted a picture of me and they said yes. So I ended up taking a picture with both of them :-) But the question is: are western tourists still so rare that Chinese wants to take pictures of them?
Staying with the locals on the mountain

Beijing is getting crowded everyday. With approximately 15 million registered residents and another 11 million "residents" withou hukou (ID), and the heat of Olympics 2008 approaching, you will see more and more tourists coming to this magnificent city.
For those who want to get out from the crowd and try something different, there are many other choices around. One being hiking.
You can hire a cab to be shared (300RMB), to the area close to Mu Tian Yu or Simatai but not to climb the Great Wall. Climb the hills and mountain around these places from the bottom. Along the way you can spend the night with the local villagers (farmer) and move on. We paid like 10RMB per head and you will get a place to sleep and dinner with the family. They will be more than happy to have you there.
As you move on, you will get to see more than those standard Great Wall route. Some of the tracks will allow you to see some wild animals and plants.
Make sure you have all your gears for hiking ready.
Silk Alley

Popular market near the US embassy. Here is the place to buy your 'designer' watches, clothes etc. When we were there there was a roaring trade in North Face jackets.
The thing to remember is that you must haggle, if I remember correctly I got a fake Timberland fleece for about half the original asking price and probably still paid over the top.
Check the number on your taxi
by Sylviav
Check the kilometer price of your taxis. In May 07 the taxis were either a 2 or a 3 (Yuan per km). The nr 2s are posted on a blue sticker on the backseat window. I got into a good tiff with a driver who had no number and claimed to be a 3 for a 45 minute trip (from Center of town to the Summer Palace) that was a considerable difference in price.

Q: Tour "We are group of 3 kiwi students with 2.5 full days to explore in Beijing on a budget. Want to see the 'must do's' great..."
A: "Two and a half days would be enough for what you mentioned. You won't need a tour for visiting these places except Great Wall. If you choose Badaling section, you can do..."
