Still need help - Train to Mongolia

by mhrunge

I want to travel to Mongolia (Erdene) from Beijing, the train seems to be the way to go, but how to arrange and what is the cost? Can I do this on my own or should I use a travel service?

Cheers,

I think all you need is here in this website. I have taken the Trans-Siberian train from Beijing to Moscow, and it was a surreal experience, not to be missed if at all possible.

Do check all the links and absorb the information. It is quite a bit better than it was when I did the trip. Enjoy this unique experience, for it is in a class of its own.

If you still have questions, come back and we will discuss them....d;o)

Thanks for the info, I had a look, but the trains seem very $$$, looking for more of a local option and cheaper as well. If you can think of another way, please let me know.

Cheers,

Companies such as Monkey Business have offices in Beijing or you can book at the station direct but beware, booking trains in China yourself can be quite a hit and miss affair

AFAIK, you can't buy tickets for international trains yourself at the train station.

Travel Tips for Beijing

Beijing Tip

by simcard

What impressed me most in Beijing? Well, crowded almost everywhere. I remember the local people told me never go out on holidays. I didn't take their kind suggestion then and so I went to Tian'anmen square. WOW!!! Then I really regret - tooooooo maaaaaannnnyyyy people!!(I am not lieing. Looking at the picture so you know.) You have to walk chest to back against each other. A ten meter distance took 10 minutes to finish. That's crazy! But that's also one very special experience for me.

Meeting people

by Winkie

My best tip is to smile, make an effort to learn some Chinese with the locals' help, and let others laugh at you. Most people there are intrigued by Westerners anyway, but a sense of humor will take you a long way.

2008

by bokononist

Apparently some kind of big sporting event will be held here in 6 years. The 2008 Olympics are EVERYWHERE you look in Beijing - I was there just a month after the city won the bid and every cab has a sign that says "Build New Beijing - Hold Great Olympics" and people are so happy to talk to you about it. They've gone on a major tree-planting spree and are working on shutting down factories and decreasing pollution, building major new facilities - all for the event! It should be fantastic. Make plans to be there in 2008 - I doubt I'll even recognize the city anymore so maybe it's better to go now and see it while you can still catch glimpses of the hutongs and history of this great city.

Calm and very interesting

by Museeuw about Liulichang Antiques Street

I was surprised to see that this street was so calm and quiet. We only saw tourists at the crossroads with Nanxinhua Jie (we came here in the beginning of April; maybe in the Summer there's more people). It has a lot of interesting shops, and I especially liked the paintings. We came back twice here actually because it was such a nice and relaxing stroll. Antiques, paintings, books ... in big shops as well as in small stalls. From the price you can see already what's real and what's not.

Irish pub close to main station

by Yso about Sorry, I don't know what it's called

I noticed an Irish pub in the road north of the main station (between the international hotel and Beijing Zahn)

It was closed for renovation when I was there, but looks like a good, convenient place to hang out if you have a night train to catch and you don't want to sit in the station for hours...

I'll update next time I go to Beijing!
