Day Tour Company Assistance

by swalsup

I am spending 3 days in Beijing next month prior to joining a cruise. I have found a company on the www, "tour-beijing.com" which has several tours I am interested in plus airport to hotel delivery and hotel to cruise terminal delivery. Has anyone used the listed company and have any pros or cons for using them? Your help will be appreciated.

Hi! Yes, I availed of tour-beijing.com last Nov2009 for our Mutianju Great Wall tour. Their service is very good & very professional. You can contact them upon arrival in Beijing & they accept 1-day advance booking so you pay at the start of the trip if you like. Their rates are very reasonable & the staff are friendly. Goodluck!

Would suggest that you try to do a search on the TripAdvisor China forums for them.

Travel Tips for Beijing

Beijing's parks

by aramat

Beijing currently has 160 parks and a further 800 are planned for the 2008 Olympic Games. The major parks - the Temple of Heaven Park, Jingshan Park, Beihai Park, among others - are visited by more than 100 million tourists every year. It's indeed very pleasant to relax in a park after a long day of sightseeing in the city. My favourite park is probably Beihai Park, though all are great and my funniest memory is related to the Temple of Heaven Park: we saw an old gentleman practicing t'ai chi, who bent down at the edge of the sidewalk (which was at least 10 cm high) and comfortably touched the road surface. It was an impressive proof of the effectiveness of t'ai chi. When he was gone, we tried to copy his movement, but failed miserably.

come to my home - off limits...

by london.gal

come to my home - off limits for more than 500 years to commoners like YOU until early this century!!!!!!!!!!!! (LOL). To the outside world, it's known simply as the Forbidden City (Palace Museum). Two hundred years ago, the admission price to enter the Forbidden City was - INSTANT DEATH. It was home to 2 dynasties of Emperors - the Ming and the Qing who didn't step out of this place unless they had to. Do drop by and pay me a visit some time.

Dong Heng club

by yangzhigong

Pool and billiards is very popular in Beijing night life, Dong Heng club is my favourite one. lot of players is expert level, if you went there alone, they also provide accompany service. Another club named Xuan Long, located at the south gate of Altar of the Earth, is also very good. they are all 24 hours club.

Shopping for pearls

by easterntrekker about Hongqiao Market (Pearl Market)

We were met at the door by an enthusiastic pearl specialist who explained all about pearl farming ( in 10 minutes or less). Even though this is a tourist grab , it is interesting if you haven't seen freshwater pearl shucking. I was surprised to see so many pearls in one shell and so many colours. This demo is all about ssales though so you need to be ready from high pitched sales efforts! The rule here is to bargain hard. The ,arkup is high and anyones guess. We were able to get 35% off and I feel we could have done better.I bought gorgeous purple pearls ( kind of a mauve colour really) . I bought the necklace with the detachable braclet and earrings too. They string the pearls while you wait!!

Beijing Hot Spot

by MickeH about Around Qianhai Lake

If you are feeling like having a bit of a pub crawl, the area around Qianhai lake can be just the place to be. A cluster of bars line big parts of the lakes shore.
You can choose to either sit inside the pub listening to insanely loud music, often sung by someone that will never make much money from their music career. There are exception, one bar, can't remember the name, had a very talented singer so keep your ears open. Even if it hurts at times.
Or else you choose to sit outside, close to the water. Looking at the neon lights reflecting in the lake.

You can take it one step further as well and rent a boat for an hour or two.

The west side of the lake seemed to be the most hectic, and the north part a bit more relaxed, although wherever you go there is likley to be loads of people out to have a good time. Just your average pub crawl clothes will do.
