xiushui market

by timbits

do they sell rock and republic jeans there?

Re: xiushui market

by ladeforbe

Hi,
Silk/Xiushui Market and Yashow/Yaxiu Market = This is where all the knock-off shoes and bags are. Lots of knock-off clothes also but quality and design are not that good. Not that many choices for men. Initial price will be at average, 500-1000% of the real price, sometimes even more. Bargain extremely hard. Shoes for example costs around 50RMB on the average while T-Shirts cost around 30-40RMB. More choices in Silk Market. Believing that you can find the bargains of Rock & Republc jeans there.

Travel Tips for Beijing

Viva la revolucion ??

by kenmerk

Sad to say, but I think the revolucion is dead. (except maybe the ipod revolucion, that is.....) While modern capitalism seems be be on most every street corner, not to many signs of the old days in Beijing...

Guess, Mao's portrait at Tiananmen being the one prominent exception....

THE SEA OF BICYCLE

by ancient_traveler

Beijing people think nothing of riding for an hour and a half to work each day and all around you can notice huge parking lots just for bikes. As appose to most places in the world Beijing people actually have to pay to park their bike in these lots. Bikes is serious in Beijing and so people have the "you could call it wise" idea that if they own a really old, terrible looking, beaten up bike, it is less likely to be stolen. Not sure how much of a point they have there but as a result, a smart looking bike is a rare sight indeed. You do however see serious locks and security devices, even on the worst looking bicycle. There is so much to be said about bicycles in Beijing and our other sights will hope to cover most of the other details.

You will notice there are milions of them, bikes everywhere streaming along at well-modulated pace throughout this huge, sprawling and flat metropolis.

Medicines

by krescent78

Bring all the medicines that you might need for general ailments like viral fever, gastric infections, etc. It is very difficult to get the western medicines. I had severe food poisoning but still had to go without medicines coz I couldn't find it anywhere, and I wasn't too enthusiastic about Chinese medicine

English translations of Chinese books

by JohanIsWeg about Waiwen Shudian

The Foreign Languages Bookstore on Wangfujing Dajie is worth a visit. Aside from English novels, travel guides and cookbooks, it also carries a line of Foreign Language Press books "dedicated to the editing, translation and publishing of... a great number of China's classics."
The volumes, with titles like 'Selected Chinese stories of the Song and Ming Dynasties', consist of short stories. Titles include 'The Jade Worker', 'The Coutesan's Jewel Box', 'The Ghost Met At Night', and 'The Three Evils'.
The tales are published in Chinese-English bilingual form, with Chinese characters on the left and English on the opposing right-hand page.
Open 0900 to 2030. English translations of Chinese classics. Buy the soft-cover titles, which weighs less and is easier to transport.

Photography bar

by mke1963 about There Cafe

There Cafe is one of those places you fall into by accident. It's a small hutong, plastered with the gritty, evocative photographs of the owner. You can while hours away here, just looking through the photo catalogues... even the menu has his hutong and northern China pictures.

A good start to the day with the ham, eggs and toast breakfast and a big mug of coffee.

Friendly place in a little known street with a good number of great cafes, restaurants and bars. Judging by the fantastic 'nude man in the Forbidden City' photographs, clothing may well be optional!
