sample the food there. As is the case with visiting any part of China really, eating is a must. Food is such an important part of Chinese culture that to really experience the country is to pig out!! Aside from the local Northern cuisine, the city contains a large variety of restaurants representing all parts of the country. But in particular you must try the local dishes, including dumplings and Peking duck. If you are not going to make your way further north or west, then Bejing would be a great place to sample cooking from the ethnic minorities in the north and west.
1 Parque-Beihai-Park
by elpariente
To walk in the North Park in the mornings is a very nice experience , because besides from being a nice enclave is the place where you may see the Chinese that go in the mornings to develop the most varied hobbies as:
-- Write with water (This "useless" amusement I like , as they use a long brush and spend many hours writing on the flor, I do not know what they write, but as they are painting the letters go drying up and disappearing )
-- Musici, they play all kind of instruments
-- Dancing, They practise with the music from a cassette
-- Others speak with the trees
-- Simply rub their hands
Football Frenzy
by sugarpuff
This is the Worker's Stadium which is situated in the east of the city, on North Worker's Stadium Road. It is here where you'll see all kinds of football matches, both international and national being payed. It was here where Real Madrid played the China team and it will also be here where Beijing plays its home matches. I went once to watch Beijing play another Chinese team, I forget who now, and it was so much fun! I have only been to one match in England before, but it was so different here. The crowd were effing and blinding and they would throw things onto the pitch and they had lots of horrible noise making machines with them! The quality of the football wasn't very good and the seats were tough plastic, but the atmosphere was fun, and that's what I went for! We hadn't bought any tickets in advance so just had to go to the dodgy dealers lurking round the front gates to buy some!!! They weren't too expensive so it worked out alright! Im sure for big international games all black market tickets would cost a fortune, so you're better off buying them in advance and legally! I know...how boring!!!!
Fake it until you make it
by maria_hz about Silk Street Market
The Silk Street market is a concept in Beijing.
The original Silk Street (Xiuhui Jie) was demolished in 2004 and the current building in the current location opened in 2005. Now it is an indoor market with five floors filled with clothes, shoes, bags, touristy stuff and jewellery for young and old.
It is famous so even if you don't fancy buying anything, do go to have a look. Many of the people we saw shopping there were foreigners, but also some Chinese do go here. It seems this place is rather controversial, as I've heard many wow they will never shop there because the prices are higher than elsewhere, whereas others love the place. Why not go to get your own opinion of the place? Anything you fancy and haggle as hard as you can if you are a foreigner. You can find fake brand clothes, sports wear, shoes, bags and wallets, as well as more chinese stuff like jade ware (again, watch out for fakes), silk table mats, fans, masks etc etc. Also pearls and jewellery of semi-precious stones. Prices here, however, are higher than outdoor markets as rents are higher for indoor stalls. To give you an idea, I buy ladies' short-sleeved tops for CNY50-60, but the starting price may be somewhere around 150-200.
Sports Bar
by SunZi about Frank's Place
We visited Frank's Place and met with one of the owners. He showed us around and we were amazed that such a hi-tech sports bar could exist in China. Frank's has 7 seperate satilite feeds, Sling Box and cable. They have about 5 plasma 42" screens and two big projector type screens. Each screen can play a different sport simultiously (if perhaps a little confusing). There were adverts for just about every sport from LIVE NFL to English bowls, Aussie Rules, Gaelic Games and rugby. I am sure football is also included.
Food was good and with Guiness on tap it was approaching heaven.
There is a program of events for everyday of the week, including Mexican Food Night and a Kids Fun Day. Frank's seems to cater for the whole family and the dedicated sports nut.
If in Beijing it is the best in town and claims to be the oldest western sports bar in Beijing. Anything goes
