small but convenient
I stayed at this hotel for two days. Very easy walk to Forbidden City. Room was very small, barely enough room to walk around the bed. Also bathroom in not private. While bathroom is in the room, there is no door or seperate room. I would recommend for those on a tight budget.
Unique Quality: My first experience where you needed to use your room card to use the elevator. Very good for security.
We will be arriving in Beijing on the 8th Oct for several days with an organized tour and are staying at the Beijing Tangshan Hotel in the Chaoyang Zone. We would like to make the most of any shopping nearby to buy clothes(rather than take with us) do fellow travellers have suggestions as to what might be close by and with the little spare time allowed to us(with the tour) what might be available in the early evenings.
Re: Shopping question

Depends on what you want..I would suggest walking up and down Wangfujing Street (its a big street!!)..there are lots of big department stores.
I bought a coat that contained down in it and was wind proof but for me it was expensive US$80.

What I need to know is if we are within walking distance of any shopping areas

www.palacesinrajasthan.com ..........shopping in India from Beijing?
There are many shopping areas near Chaoyang, for info try; http://www.fodors.com/world/asia/china/beijing/shopping-nam.html
If you go to TimeOut magazine you will find lots of info about shopping (and everyhting else) in this area- including ladies street!
You are away out of the central CBD but there will be plenty to buy, see and do....have a good time

I live not far from the hotel. as it's not in the CBD area, there are no big shop store around a walking distance from Tangshan Hotel. But there are some small supermarkets.
Travel Tips for Beijing
Another good bookstall disappears
by mke1963
After the disappearance, in summer 2003, of the excellent bookshop in the Lufthansa Centre, now another one has vanished. The bookstall in the lobby had a particularly good selection of books on China. It is now a jewellery shop. A selection of books (maybe 5% of what was in the lobby bookstall) is now available in the Business Centre which is in the connecting corridor to Starbucks/Watsons. Oh...and the good little supermarket Nick's Mart is now outside the Lido, just alongside Starbucks.
Take pictures with style!
by agaiax
Hmmm... Is that funny or is it funny? Taking pictures - Asian style. And don't be surrprised, if they ask you to take a picture with them... and their mom, and dad, and brother, a cousin, a friend... It's just a national custom...
Ming Tombs, Sacred Way
by histamin32
Bus-loads of tourists visit the Ming tombs, but usually they only stay at the Ding Ling tomb to see the chamber. Ding Ling certainly is worth seeing, but equally interesting is the Sacred Way a few kilometers from Ding Ling. It is the ancient way to the Ming tombs, lined with marble statues of animals and officials. When we were there (during the week), we were the only ones, we had the whole Sacred Way just for us.
Ladies only!
by ntm2322 about Nu2 ren2 jie1 (Lady Street)
The Ladie’s Street (nu3 ren2 jie1) is located near the Lufthansa business district.
In here there are hundreds of stalls selling all fashions of women's clothes, shoes and jewelry. And a lot of stuff from Hong Kong and South Korea as well. If you want, you (lady/miss) can even get manicures and pedicures as well as massage and other beauty treatments.
You can also take your friends with you since there are plenty of cafes “in the streets of the street” to enjoy a Chinese style lunch (Sichuan, Canton, Hunan, Hangzhou, Xinjiang,etc.). There are also teahouses and Japanese and Korean restaurants. And you can even buy some flowers in the adjacent flowers market.
Don't worry, shopping information is broadcast in Chinese and English, alternating with "ladies music".
What else could you ask for? Woman's stuff. If your bargaining skills are good, only a few hundred.
Air China
by qin
Air China is fine in general especially for international routes, although it's not as good as Singapore Airline in my opinion. But overall, service and food are good. And Air China is a member of Star Alliance. It shares airport lounge with Air New Zealand at Sydney airport, quite nice (at least it's better than the one in Beijing airport). Usually Chinese people like to choose Air China when they fly international routes, so most of customers in flight will be Chinese.
Q:Tour "We are group of 3 kiwi students with 2.5 full days to explore in Beijing on a budget. Want to see the 'must do's' great..."
A: "Two and a half days would be enough for what you mentioned. You won't need a tour for visiting these places except Great Wall. If you choose Badaling section, you can do..."
