Beijing Downtown Backpackers Accommodation
by Fig33
I will be traveling to Beijing in late April and am interested in anyone's experience with the Beijing Downtown Backpackers Accomodation (hostel). Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers David

you can look for www.hihostels.com and
http://www.yhachina.com/index.php?hostID=2
Youth hostels in Dongcheng district are right at the city centre, near the Forbidden City, Lama Temple and BeiHai Park.
there are also some budget chain hotels, not very like backpackers' home. such as www.7daysinn.cn and www.homeinns.com, the former is which I like very much but unfortunately they have no English websites.

Stayed there for 5 days in January 2005 and walked past it again last week. Would highly recommend it.

I study in Beijing. My parents came to visit me the other day, & they are living in a tradional courtyard hotel called Jihousecn Hotel right now. I think it's really cultural, & the decoration is classic. The service is good, they met my parents in the airport and took them to the hotel just for no charge. You can consider it. I think this hotel may be good to you, and its decoration is four-star rated.
PS their website: www.jihousecn.com
Travel Tips for Beijing
Modern Beijing
by Yubert
This picture was taken inside one of Beijing's new HyperMarkets. And is is a picture of a Space Shuttle Ride simulator. This is known in the Entertainment Industry as a LBE (or Location Based Entertainment).
Customers are strapped inside the cockkpit. Then the entire cockpit moves and rotates within a 6-degree radius, while a video is shown. The combination of the video and cockpit movements is enough to make people think they're experiencing the real thing.
you can find rdies like this in Las vegas and at various DisneyQuest centers. I was surprised to see one in China.
Figures on the roof
by nepalgoods
During many centuries the Imperial Palace burned down many times, as most of the buildings are mainly made of wood. To protect the buildings against lightning, the architects put these figures on every corner of the roofs.
The first figur is a man riding on a hen. It is said, that once a tyrant prince in 3rd century b.c. was defeated and killed by his enemies. To remember his evil deeds the people put his figure on a hen on the end of the roof. The hen cannot jump from the roof, because the prince is too heavy and the hen cannot go back, because a dragon is on the other end.. Between the princes figure and the dragon are some other figures. All figures are symboles to prevent the house from fire and lightning. Phenix, Lion, Horse and so on...
Getting ready... for the climb...
by RinaNeo
Probably a good idea to take a nice pic before climbing... in case the wind is too strong and you're too tired and sweaty after so many steep flight of steps.... you'll be too tired to take any pics after that.....
Psst.. wanna buy a watch?
by Yubert about Genuine Omega watches
Now this is a big change from 1986. Back then, the only foreign watches I saw were Japanese brands like Orient and Citizen, and I believe Orient is owned by Citizen.
These days, one can buy the latest Swiss-made watches including the just-relased at the time, Daniel's Co-axial escapement mechanical watch.
I also saw other higher-end brands like Vacheron-Constantin.
rental car and guided tours in Beijing

I have stayed in Jiu Hua Spa&Resort near Beijing (with my family) for 6 days. I used the services of Robinson Li tours for travelling at major Beijing sites. As related to other chinese people (who should knew english as lomg they work in tourism) the english spoken by his team is excellent. Thery can solve also all kind of accommodation problems helping you as translator. The program is flexible, so we have made a very good choice. The price of 88-1000RMB per day is the best one as related to his flexible program and additional services. It is true, I could find a taxi driver with less money, ...but I wonder whether they help you all problems which could appear at check-in and check-out at hotel.
