Hotel selection

by ohaiyo

Hi Everyone,

Ill be staying in Beijing for 7 days in September. I'm thining of staying at the Wangfujing Grand Hotel because it is so close to all the major sites near the Forbidden City. One drawback that I've heard is that the subway stations are about a twenty minute walk away.

For anyone who is familiar with that area of Beijing, are there convenient public transportation near that hotel to the subway stations? Walking twenty minutes back to the hotel form the subway station after a day's excursion to sites not near the Forbidden City is not appealing.

If anyone has suggestions of other hotels in the area. Let me know.

Thanks.

I stayed in that hotel when I was in beijing. It is between the great shopping belt of wangfujing and the subway station. A few good restaurants also are located between. Wonderful if before and after a day's trip to have breakfast and dinner.

I've there this year, it is more or less within 10 minutes walking distance between the hotel & the subway station.

There's so many tourist attractions in the Dong Cheng district, and walking around the area is half the fun!
Enjoy.

I would recommend CityTel Inn, Nanjing Grand Hotel, Tang Yue Hotel etc. All are within 5-10 mins walk to either Tiananmen East or Wangfujing metro stops.

Yes, the subway is no more than 10 mins away from the hotel. Don't worry about that. That whole area has many bus stops and if you can read Chinese or even if you can't it will be fun to hop on a bus and see where it takes you just to get the experience of being on a Beijing bus!

Have a great trip!

Travel Tips for Beijing

Walking around Jiangshin Park....

by dave987

Walking around Jiangshin Park. In the early morning all the songbirds are given 'fresh air'. During the day groups of people paint and draw the rocks and flowers. As the sun sets people stand on top of rocks and the pagodas an generally shout!

Somewhere that not many tourists/foreigners go. Buying food from the markets and eating in the many small restaurants

Ballroom dancing in the Park

by gaizee

It was a up lifting experience to go for a lovely evening walk around this man made lake and enjoy some of the local atmosphere. At one end of the lake we found rows of resturants and when you walk further on we saw so many of the locals ballroom dancing , there was so much activity going on it was exciting.
Massage's, Food, Dancing, rides, and of course beggars.
You see many beggars in China.

Don't miss the Painted Lady @ Forbidden City!

by SandiM

While exploring the Northeast section of the Forbidden City, I wandered along a quiet avenue from the north tip to due south. On my left, down another alleyway, I peered a figure peering back at me. Nonplussed, I thought I had intruded into a private area, but after a moment I realized I was gazing at the full-figure painting of a lady gazing back at me. I was so charmed by the sight that I took this photo. Alas, I cannot find out anything about her in my guidebooks. Does anyone know who she is or who she represents, peering around the door? Look closely, or you'll miss this shy mistress!

Silk, textiles, and other good Chinese junk

by amambaw about Silk Market

If you've ever been bartering in Mexico before, just picture a Mexican market on steroids, and you'll have a good idea of what the silk market is like!

The market is full of beautiful silk products (pyjamas, robes, shirts, scarves, and so on) as well as tons of textiles (cashmere scarves, clothes of all types, tableclothes, etc.), and handicrafts. Everything in the market can be had way cheaper than at any of the stores in the city, but you will have to bargain for it.

The bartering here can be a little overwhelming. The store owners will grab you and drag you back to their shops in order to make a sale, so if you are uncomfortable with this, maybe go with someone bigger than you! I had a man actually block my path for a good two minutes shouting in my face that I should buy a tanktop that I merely glanced at. I finally had to put my hand in the guy's face and yell at him to stop before he left me alone. When you barter, just remember a few things:

1) No one will sell to you unless they are making a profit. Start your bids at obscenely low prices and work up.

2) Don't worry about offending the merchants, they deal with people who are bigger jerks than you everyday. You won't hurt their feelings if you barter hard, as long as you keep smiling.

3) BE ABLE TO WALK AWAY!!! This is the most important. There is nothing at any shop that you can't get somewhere else. If the shopkeepers see that you can't say no, they won't give you the best deal. Also, walking away is a good bargaining tactic, as they will run after you shouting good prices.

Afanti Restuarant

by tina_bff about Afanti Restuarant

You know, a typical nitelife of youth in Beijing would be dinner-bar/KalaOK till midnight or even longer. In this restuarant you would enjoy whole night there.
Menu are all typical flavored of Sinkiang, and a bottle of wine named Loulan is a must.
At about 20:00, a band comes out from behind on a small stage...performance begins.
Then the pretty Sinkiang girls and handsome boys in costume with paillettes, they dance wildly and perfectly...watch out, she or he would invite you to join them! Always there are some guests stay on the stage and wouldn't like to leave, dancing!
Some little boys rush out with a big botryoid of balloon...suddenly the balloons are flying all over the hall. Guests are excited and trying to catch those balloons, haha, guess what? they would step up on the table, dancing with the hot music!
Even if you did never dance, you would be arosed by the joyful air and jump on the table, moving your feet and waist, shaking your arms rhythmically!
