Beijing in January
by Wati81
I am going to Shanghai for one-month for work and I am planning to visit Beijing. Is early January a good time to visit Beijing? I heard that it's going to be freezing cold. As most probably I would be traveling alone, is there any good advise for a non-chinese speaking female to survive in Beijing?

I do have a choice of whether to visit Beijing or not in January. I was just thinking about it (since I'm in China might as well make use of my time here to visit Beijing) if it's ok to go to Beijing in January because some people advise me against it as it's going to be very very cold. I'm still deciding though because if I don't make the trip down to Beijing in January, I will simply explore Shanghai more.

When else would you have to visit Beijing? If you could tell us your other options then maybe we would be in a better position to judge.

The Dazibaos
by kokoryko
The dazibaos are not what they used to be !!
They were created for “free” expression of “citizens”, political education and information, now. . . it is financial information. . . times have changed. . . .
Well it is a bit a silly thought, but I am not sure this kind of Dazibao is better than the former ones.
Chosing between Mutianyu or Simatai or Jinchanling
by oliviertia
How to choose between the different sites ?
I visited the first 3, so I can give some advice:
- Jinchanling to Simatai: far away (3 hours), difficult to get there unless you book some kind of tour. Very hard walk on some treacherous bits as the wall was partially restored. Wonderful scenery, then it gets less interesting as you walk downhill. Only foreign tourists. rather expensive as you are asked to pay for extras (entrance fees twice + toll for a bridge)
- Simatai: far (2.5 hours) restored. Very steep. Scenery unfolds as you keep climbing up and up. If you are tired, you can always go down. Hard walk, but always safe. Indeed this summer they paved the path from the car park to the Wall.
- Mutianyu: closer to BJ. (2 hours). cheaper. Steep climb to access the wall, but then gentle ups and downs. I recommend using the cable car to save energy. Very wide. You can see very long stretches of the wall. Very green. More tourists (Chinese+Foreigners)

Beijing subway is one of the most crowded places in the Earth but I am glad that you're able to reach the other end of Beijing within half hour. The trains are punctual, they run frequently every a few minutes but even though they're large there's seldom a place to sit, unless you board from the first station. We have been using it almost every day, though... for 2 yuan fare to any distance and any line, it is very affordable.
Questions and Answers
Q: Tour "We are group of 3 kiwi students with 2.5 full days to explore in Beijing on a budget. Want to see the 'must do's' great..."
A: "Two and a half days would be enough for what you mentioned. You won't need a tour for visiting these places except Great Wall. If you choose Badaling section, you can do..."
