thanjks for all the great responses! question about electricity?
by coramper
thanks everyone for the great flood of information. some quick reactions, in no particular order...don't think i could sleep undergound, just a little claustrophobic! mom and boyfriend may be 73 and 77, but have more energy than me, so no problem with walking just about anywhere. thanks for the opera tips, will check that out (love opera!). thanks for the casual dressing tips, will save more room in my suitcase for all the great purchases i hope to make. electricity, i have to have a blowdryer (thick, curly hair that takes hours to dry naturally), so easy to buy one over there or do i need to try to purchase an adaptor over here (i'm in southern usa)? again, many thanks for your responses and time. susan

If you're coming for more than a week, it could be cheaper and easier just to buy a cheap one here.
thanks for all your help, ellyse

Hello Susan!
You sound so excited about your trip, and so you should be, what a fantastic opportunity you have to be able to travel for free!
Ref hairdryers..they can be bought at shopping malls throughout Beijing, small and big ones, malls that is, although I'm sure you can find different sized dryers too! I bought one here in Beijing back in 1999 and I still use it to this day! You will need an adaptor however as we work on 220v here. I would say buy one in the States and bring it with you plus adaptor as this will save you time walking around looking to buy one!
Have a great great trip..if you need any help before you arrive or while you're here, please email me as I live here and am always ready to show people around! Even if it means taking you to a good local restaurant where they have picture menus!
thanks sugarpuff! what a generous offer!

thanks for the info on the hairdryer. i was going thru my bag of adaptors and found one that said china on it, so i'll hope for the best. think i have a dual-voltage hairdryer around here somewhere....thanks for your offer of help, advice, for my upcoming trip. i appreciate your offer and doubtless will take you up at it, as i am bound to have more questions. thanks for your time. i was looking at your page. what a fascinating life your live! susan
Travel Tips for Beijing
Beijing Airport
by woosha708
Very clean and efficient. Don't forget your Airport Tax payment before departure.
Shopping is overpriced, but not bad for last min. gifts to take home. Be sure to bargain including pulling the "walk-away" move!
Quick, easy eating on the lower level. Can be a fun adventure w/o Chinese language knowledge.
Westerners
by pmarshuk
Do not be surprised if people on the street cover their mouths and noses as they walk past you. Because the Chinese diet does not include anywhere near as many dairy products as the west, we give off a very distinctive odour which they find unpleasant.
Tastefully decorated
by ghweeh
At least that was my view when I looked at these dustbin in the park. Even at other attactions I visited, each have their uniqueness. Amazed that they paid so much attention right down to things that people hardly notice. They were always three side-by-side; batteries, non-recycle & recycle.
Lufthansa Shopping Center
by Bamara about Very good quality for reasonable prices
The Lufthansa Shopping Center has a very good selection of the best goods you can buy at Beijing. For acceptable and reasonable prices you can find from silk scarves to chinese medicine almost everything. I have been there in 1992 so the pic was made during that time. But I have heard, that the Shopping center is still excellent. Silk textiles for very good prices and other typical textiles. Average prices compare to the very good qualtity you will get
No Shortage of Night Life
by keeweechic about Hard Rock Cafe
I walked for miles past numerous ring roads, construction and highways until I found this place. The map I had wasn't exactly to scale! All for the sake of collecting a guitar pin! However a cold beer at the end of a very hot and tiring day was very welcomed. The food wasn't bad either and there was an Australian band playing.
The restaurant entrance features a bright red 1960 vintage Cadillac, a huge neon-lit guitar, and marble piano keys that pave the way to the Cafe. The interior offers an 8-metre-wide dome, painted with images of Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Little Richard, Elvis Presley, and popular tourist spots such as Tiananmen Square and Temple of Heaven. The guitar-shaped bar, measuring 11.5 metres, is truly a masterpiece. The centre stage is set against a huge stained glass wall measuring 4.6 metres by 4.8 metres
It was interesting to see a table of American couples nearby who had obviously just adopted new Chinese babies.. all comparing notes and just enjoying a 'new family' night out.
