Serviced Apartments or Hotel
by maribeldizon
Hi would appreciate if you can recommend a serviced apartment or hotel that is reasonably priced and centrally located who have friendly and helpful staff. We are a family of 10 and plan to travel Sept 2011. Thank You!

It's been a few years since we stayed there, but I would recommend the Hotel Shatan. My review, which was originally an answer on the forum, is on my page http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/1103b9/fa3c0/3/ . I have recently looked at the reviews on Trip Advisor and note that it has an 88% approval rating, which is very good. The few complaints tend to be individual experiences. We found the staff friendly, even those who spoke little Chinese, and the hotel was clean and the rooms nicely furnished and about average size. If you want a Western hotel, then you will have to pay Western prices and stay in a place that has no local character. A friend of mine stayed in Beijing as part of an expensive tour, and got bacon and eggs for breakfast and staff who spoke perfect English. We paid budget prices, got friendly Chinese staff, and rather unusual breakfasts. Just what we wanted! It's very central, close to Forbidden City and Beihei Park. Enjoy Beijing. Bruce

Travel Tips for Beijing
Keep to the edges
by dm064
There are two essentials to see - the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven Park.
At the Forbidden City keep to the edges. The main central buildings are crowded and it is difficult to get through the croiwdsto see inside (in general one can't enter the buildings). It can also be hot and shadeless. In contrast keep to the edges in the shade, away from the crowds and try to get lost in the smaller pavilions anfd gardens - the area around the Hall of paintings and the gardens to the East of the Imperial Library are peaceful and beautiful.
Just to the East of gift shop (excellent for Chinese handbags) , through a gate in front of the Hall of Clocks there are two small bars to left and right where basic food and a cold beer can be had.
Wander! Many areas especially...
by aoiaraumi
Wander! Many areas especially in the lake area near the Drum Tower are perfect for wandering. So is(or was) the Qianmen area between Tiananmen Square and the Temple of Heaven. First time I walked out of the subway into Tiananmen Square. What a strange place!
Antiseptic cream and sundries
by JBourne
You can't drink the water in Beijing and I found when I cut my finger, it became mildly infected and wouldn't heal for ages after washing it in the water. I was a little worried about it too as it was throbbing for days and very painful for such a small cut. Annoying when such a small problem would not have been an issue back home.
I would recommend that visitors take their own little medical kit including an antiseptic cream. Most good hotels supply plug adapters for electrical goods. The adapter that we'd brought from home which specified 'for use in China' didn't work in Beijing or Hong Kong. The one that was in the hotel room worked perfectly with my hair tongs and mobile phone/camera charger. I'd check that your appliances work at a range of inputs or the lower voltage might affect them. Most chargers will work without problem.
On our way to the great wall...

On our way to the great wall of china, we made a quick stopped at the factory of bronce and copper pots. First they show you the whole process and then thwy launch you into a store. The prices are ok.
Costume, dance, song and drum
by SLLiew about Peking Opera
Do not miss an entertaining night at the world famous Beijing Opera. Usually there is a story of a Chinese legend or historical episode. The Monkey King is one of my favorites. Colorful makeup with different bright costume and exaggerated eye movement and body gestures. Dancing and acrobatic jumps with fans or swords.
There is also individual sopra, tenor or base singing by individual performers which get hearty response from the audience.
Questions and Answers
Q: Tour "We are group of 3 kiwi students with 2.5 full days to explore in Beijing on a budget. Want to see the 'must do's' great..."
A: "Two and a half days would be enough for what you mentioned. You won't need a tour for visiting these places except Great Wall. If you choose Badaling section, you can do..."
