Shanglin Hostel: 350 year old historic site

A hostel/hotel featuring an historic traditional hutong courtyard. The wood art in the courtyard must be worth tens of thousands of dollars. I loved the authenticity of the place. A great first place to stay in China.

Friendly front desk, free internet, 4 bed "dorm" room at 55 rmb per person. Many regular rooms with showers and toilets.

Unique Quality: This place is historic and somewhat buried in a hutong, but it is certainly worth searching out. You could ask for directions at the better known Leo Hostel because they are both owned by the same people.

Initially, in this area, I only saw the Leo Hostel and further down ZhaLan after the turn off to the Shanglin a modern building containing a modern large hostel, but later wanderings in the neighbor revealed a good number of other hostels. I would be surprised if any had a more authentic Chinese feel than the Shanglin. I will go back.

Morning Sun Hostel: Central backpackers

This is a cheap, comfortable hostel in central Beijing. It was hard to find at first, but it is around the corner from the **** shopping centre that is attached to the **** hotel.

Although they don't speak much English (common in China - learn some Mandarin, it's appreciated), the staff were helpful. Check in and out were simple and the rooms were clean.

Unique Quality:
The hostel is rather strange because you feel as though you are sleeping in an office block! It is clean and quiet. Do not go expecting a party atmosphere because there isn't one!

The bathrooms are clean enough, all communal. Toilets can sometimes be a little gross - but again that's very common in China anyway.

They have laundry, internet, tour booking service and they take reservations.

Beijng (Peking) Down Town Backpackers Accomodation: Backpackers Haven

Absolutely fabulous. There should be more such places through out the world. The place was clean, affordable, conveniently located and an awesome staff.

Unique Quality: Internet, Bar with small restaurant attached,A/C, 24 hour hotwater and free airport pickup if you stay at least three nights. Laundry, luggage storage and resonably priced phones were available on site too.

Templeside House Hostel: Life in the Back Streets

I’ve stayed at Templeside twice now, for a total of 7 nights, and I can’t imagine a better place to stay in Beijing. The hostel is a converted house in a hutong north west of the Forbidden City. Bobby and his wife were always helpful, especially when I missed one of my trains coming up from Vietnam. They have several unique tours they can arrange, including a motorbike ride around Beijing at night and when it comes to food, they have a list of Chinese dishes you can order in if you’re not feeling like going out to try some of the great restaurants in the area. I was there twice in the winter, and had no problems with heat or showers. All of the facilities are brand-new as of 2006. In the summer, Templeside’s inner courtyard would be a great place to relax.

Unique Quality: The amenities of home in a traditional Beijing hutong.

Internet in the common room. ADSL hookup for laptops.

Harbour Inn: Cheap & Best vanue in Beijing

Two and half month we travelling in China. At last came to Beijing and staying Harbour Inn.
We are very much satisfite with Harbour Inn's good service and careing. That Inn is clean and excellant location only 80 meter distance from Subway and we always got all bus service arround Beijing near Harbour Inn. We staying there 5 nights. Last evening from management gave to us One Chinese traditional dinner. Its very tastey!! Every morning they serve two kinds of complimentary breakfast Chinese and continental but we took always Chinese breakfast.
Here room price is very cheap and service is very high.
We want to tell all traveler just take a Beijing Harbour Inn's taste.

Red Capital Residence: Kitch Hotel

Definately has an appeal to a certain type of traveller.. This boutique hotel is in a rennovated Dugong house and only has 5 rooms. I stayed in the Chairman Mao Suite which is the biggest one.

Although the Chairman Mao meomorabilia and general decor are fabulous the hotel lacks the service one expects in a boutique hotel. even down to simple things like the hair dryer not working.

Unfortunately the unsatsfactory service meant we cut out stay short.

#12 Dajinsi Lane, Gulou St., Beijing, China: A good house

We were there, but didnt stay, as before didnt know about it!

Unique Quality: I would like to advise u to stay in a good place (soon , i will put some pics of it here).
It is a 300-year old court-yard, it belongs to a family and they are trying to preserve its traditional structure.
The family of this house had already lived there for 4 generations, and now it belongs to use as a personal property.

Here are some info about it:

Red Lantern: Hostel

I enjoyed my stay in 'Red Lantern' very much.

- the room was good,
- the atmosphere was great,
- the stuff was helpful,
- laundry services,
- Internet services,
- offering tours and airport transfer.

NOTE: They have 2 buildings, located within 7 minutes walk from each other. The main building has dormitories, the second one(where we stayed) offers private rooms with bathrooms.
To check in, you`ll have to go to the main building first. As for check out, you can do so in either of them.

PRICE: We payed total of 220RMB ($27.5) per night for a room with 2 beds and a private bathroom.

Other Prices:
- Internet. 1RMB for 10 minutes,
- Airport pickup. 160RMB ($20),
- Bringing to the airport. 150RMB ($18.75),
- CD burn. 15RMB ($1.9),
- Big bottle of water. 5RMB ($0.6),
- Small bottle of orange juice. 4RMB ($0.5),
- Bowl of dumplings. 15RMB ($1.9),
- Breakfast (bacon, french fries, 2 eggs) is about 20RMB ($2.5),
- Tour to the Great Wall (MuTianYu). 180RMB ($22.5).

Unique Quality: Since it`s located in hutongs, it was really interesting to live there.
I also liked the inside yards - they are like living rooms where everybody gathers to eat/chat/use Internet.
