#12 Dajinsi Lane, Gulou St., Beijing, China: A good house
We were there, but didnt stay, as before didnt know about it!
Unique Quality: I would like to advise u to stay in a good place (soon , i will put some pics of it here).
It is a 300-year old court-yard, it belongs to a family and they are trying to preserve its traditional structure.
The family of this house had already lived there for 4 generations, and now it belongs to use as a personal property.
Here are some info about it:

I enjoyed my stay in 'Red Lantern' very much.
- the room was good,
- the atmosphere was great,
- the stuff was helpful,
- laundry services,
- Internet services,
- offering tours and airport transfer.
NOTE: They have 2 buildings, located within 7 minutes walk from each other. The main building has dormitories, the second one(where we stayed) offers private rooms with bathrooms.
To check in, you`ll have to go to the main building first. As for check out, you can do so in either of them.
PRICE: We payed total of 220RMB ($27.5) per night for a room with 2 beds and a private bathroom.
Other Prices:
- Internet. 1RMB for 10 minutes,
- Airport pickup. 160RMB ($20),
- Bringing to the airport. 150RMB ($18.75),
- CD burn. 15RMB ($1.9),
- Big bottle of water. 5RMB ($0.6),

Unique Quality: Since it`s located in hutongs, it was really interesting to live there.
I also liked the inside yards - they are like living rooms where everybody gathers to eat/chat/use Internet.

hotel was alright..it was clean. the staff didnt speak much english..the free breakfast wasnt that great..i mostly ate the breads and fruit. the room was small but clean. only one electrical outlet in the bathroom and no alarm clock. this hotel was a part of our packagen so i didnt have a choice. there are only 2 elevators in the hotel so i found myself waiting for sometimes 5 minutes for the elevator. i discovered the holiday inn lido... i would have stayed there instead. we ate dinner there one night and the food was good. the hotel also had a lot of shops and their staff seemed to be fluent in english.
Unique Quality: our room did have a view of beijing but i believ we were in the business district

Chongwenmen Solo 2 Apartments: Youth Hostel
The apartments come with washing machine, fridge, microwave, tv and also cooking utensils. It makes your stay so comfortable that you feel like home. I will recommend this to family travelling to Beijing bcos the apartments are slightly larger than hotel rooms and the facilities given by the providers gives your children the extra space.
Unique Quality: Quiet, and secured with security guards 24 hours a day. Location just 5 mins from the New World Centre with an extensive supermarket selling just anything you need.

Beijing International Youth Hostel: cheap, clean, good, accomodation
Great place, well positioned. If your arriving my rail then its directly opposite Beijing Central station. Easy place to get back to in taxi, just point to the station on your map.
Inside there are good staff who speak English on the reception desk. I was quite happy to leave my money with them to pay for a train and place ticket that was being delivered. They can alsoa rrange tours to the great wall etc.
There is a fantastic bar there open pretty much 24 hours. Also internet access is cheap for half an hour. The bars a great place to hang out and meet fellow travelers. I was in a dorm style room with 4 people, but you can get 8 bed rooms as well as single and double rooms. Cheap cheerful and clean. About 20 minute walk to Tiananmen square along the main road, easy to find. Also a good shop next door where you can pick up basics, as well as a small shop inside the hostel.

Leo Hostel: Hostel near Tiananmen square
Very cheap. I stayed in a dorm room with about 10 other people. Everydoby were nice and polite. There very about a dozen nationalities during the two weeks I stayed. Safety can be a problem if somebody would want to steal.
Excellent location. It is near everything. You can take the subway to get across the city fast or bus if you need to go anywhere else. The Tiananmen square and the Forbidden City are just a short walk distance.
Unique Quality: Excellent food although they dont have kitchen or restaurant in the hostel itself. When you order the staff go and get if from somewhere. Especially try the chilichicken.

Dafang Hotel: A huge, grand and empty hotel
This strange hotel is owned by Chinas railwaystation. It is a gigantic hotel with a luxurious atmosphere - at least it was once.
I was here with a small group of tourists easter-05. It seemed like this hotel, with about 20 floors, was totally empty - we were the only guests!
The most luxurious was the entrance. The room was OK, but with a ridiculous hard bed - like most hotelbeds in China.
It is a bit outside of what you can call the city center of Beijing. With a taxi it took about 10 minutes to Tiananmen Square. There were to kiosks right outside of the hotel, but nothing more worth checking out. If you are traveling in China by train, it is right by one of Chinas trainstations.
The staff was fairly good in speaking english, and will be very helpful with writing down adresses in chinese for taxidrivers.
Unique Quality: The feeling of being special - the only guest of a gigantic hotel.

Jinhai Xinxin: Hutong Hotel
I have not stayed at this place, but booked it for some friends. Beijing is encouraging owners of it's old siheyuan (courtytard houses) to open them up for tourism, seeking to encourage preservation of these kinds of houses that now hold 4 families instead of just one.
This one is a small, one courtyard home that used to be a temple in the Ming Dynasty. The family that owns it has lived there since then and have restored much of it and are continuing to do so.
The hosts are super nice and make you feel like you've been invited into a home. I would truely recommend this place...
Unique Quality: Central, but out of the way....it is located in the Houhai area, close to lively nightlife and good food, but still in the heart of old Beijing with the drum tower and bell tower within 5 minutes.
All new amenities...that can be put into a 500 year old courtyard house.
Wonderfully furnished rooms...all period stuff...very unique.
