Red Lantern: Hostel
I enjoyed my stay in 'Red Lantern' very much.
- the room was good,
- the atmosphere was great,
- the stuff was helpful,
- laundry services,
- Internet services,
- offering tours and airport transfer.
NOTE: They have 2 buildings, located within 7 minutes walk from each other. The main building has dormitories, the second one(where we stayed) offers private rooms with bathrooms.
To check in, you`ll have to go to the main building first. As for check out, you can do so in either of them.
PRICE: We payed total of 220RMB ($27.5) per night for a room with 2 beds and a private bathroom.
Other Prices:
- Internet. 1RMB for 10 minutes,
- Airport pickup. 160RMB ($20),
- Bringing to the airport. 150RMB ($18.75),
- CD burn. 15RMB ($1.9),
- Big bottle of water. 5RMB ($0.6),
- Small bottle of orange juice. 4RMB ($0.5),
- Bowl of dumplings. 15RMB ($1.9),
- Breakfast (bacon, french fries, 2 eggs) is about 20RMB ($2.5),
- Tour to the Great Wall (MuTianYu). 180RMB ($22.5).
Unique Quality: Since it`s located in hutongs, it was really interesting to live there.
I also liked the inside yards - they are like living rooms where everybody gathers to eat/chat/use Internet.

Hao Yuan Hotel: Best located traditional courtyard hotel
I have not stayed there yet, but will.
My friends who stayed there call it a 'great experience'.
See details in the hotel's official website.
My friends tried two types of rooms.
Unique Quality: Classical Chinese courtyard setting with a rich history.
Best located among all this type. Walking distance to Wangfujing shopping center. If fit, walking distance to the Forbidden City, Tian An Men Square and few other major tourist sites.
Easty to access, take Airport Shuttle and alight at Ya Bao Lu stop, then either take a taxi or 20 minute walk.

Home Inn: Cheap, Clean and Brand New
We were looking for cheap, clean and quiet hotel at a convenient location. We find it!! At the time of check in in November 2004, this relatively new hotel chain was just open for business at this particular location. Everything was brand new. We paid RMB 180 per night for two person. They have even cheaper room but smaller than the one you see in this photo. Room came with air-con and heat, as well as all you can drink bottled water.
Unique Quality: Very basic, no non-sense type of accomondation. It does have a restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner at a reasonable price. However, there are many eating places nearby. One feature we love very much is "vinyl floor," where cigarette smoke and other dirty stuff cannot hide. They also offered non-smoking room.

Red House: Clean but Overprice
This was our first night in Beijing, and we find this place through Lonely Planet. On this day, all regular rooms were booked, so they said. We paid RMB 350 for their so called suite, which is actually similiar to a one bedroom apartment with kitchen and all. However, the kitchen had no cooking stoves or utensils of any kind except for a frig. The bedroom was so small that a "tiny" double bed basically took up the entire room, and it was too uncomfortable for two people - definitely not for two persons of western size. The next morning, one of the guest complained about party noises that went on all night. Well, we were lucky that our room was at the end of the hallway.
Unique Quality: Breakfast is included in the price. The lock at the door seems very flimsy and could possibly opened by keys of any other guests. And that was the main reason we checked out the next day.

The Red Lantern House: Beijing's Cozy & Friendly Hostel
The Red Lantern House is tucked away inside an old crumbling grey Hutong. Step inside, and it is glowing with lanterns and friendly staff will greet you, as well as a cute black Spaniel who shares my boyfriend's name, Michael.
The rooms are very clean and good sized. It is easy to book on hostels.com. There is cheap internet access in a cozy lounge. The indoor courtyard in the middle is where travellers meet and chat about their Beijing experiences over breakfast and cup of coffee or tea. And later at night, over some beers.
There is a very friendly and open athmosphere about this hostel. Michael stayed up most nights chatting with other travellers and listening to the owner play his chinese violin.
We booked our trip to the Great Wall from the hostel, at a good price. 160RMB for transport there and back. We also booked to see the Chinese Acrobatics with our hostel. 120RMB including a ride there and back and the tickets. It was very easy to book things through the hostel.
The toilets were generally kept clean. Same as the showers. I insisted on using the one on the far corner, coz it had the best water pressure. The others were pathetic dribbles.
Owners are smiley, friendly, and speak English.

Leo Hostel: Hostel near Tiananmen square
Very cheap. I stayed in a dorm room with about 10 other people. Everydoby were nice and polite. There very about a dozen nationalities during the two weeks I stayed. Safety can be a problem if somebody would want to steal.
Excellent location. It is near everything. You can take the subway to get across the city fast or bus if you need to go anywhere else. The Tiananmen square and the Forbidden City are just a short walk distance.
Unique Quality: Excellent food although they dont have kitchen or restaurant in the hostel itself. When you order the staff go and get if from somewhere. Especially try the chilichicken.

Leo2 Hostel: One of the better hostel in Beijing for Foreigners
They tried very hard to accomodate, but of course, I also understand that they are speaking behind our back because I understand Chinese. I chosed this hostel because it is comfortable and convenient when it comes to food and transport.
It is located not very far away from the Qian Men Subway Station and there are plenty of food, and shops along the way, from dusk till dawn. It is bustling with activities.
The staff speaks good English, and there is a reputable Chinese Medicine Hall (Tong Ren Tang) along the way. It was one of the earliest establishment along the walking street that served the palace a couple of hundred years ago. It also has a night clinic if anything goes wrong.
Unique Quality: Great location, and clean.
Basic amenities, bulit on a refurbshed Chinese coutyard house.

'Anonymous Hostel': 'Anonymous Hostel'
Having just flow across a big ocean I was tired and just wanted a cheap place to stay. The people of this place found me. The rooms are quiet dirty. It was once an okay mid-range hotel that fell into disrepair, so now it is a hostel. The was construction going on outside my window from 6am to midnight. I'm sure that project has ended and a new one started near by.
The name of the place was listed as one thing out side the hotel, another inside, and third on the phone in the room.
Unique Quality: The best quality (other than affordability) was the location. It was a short walk to Wangfujing Dajie and a little more to Tienamen and the Forbidden Palace.
For the cheapness it did have hot water, AC, and TV.
