Plane tickets to Beijing
by Hulmer82
I am planing on traveling to Beijing JUly 16 through August 2nd. I am wondering if anyone knows a good place to find a cheap flight from the US? Or if $1,500.00 is a good price for a ticket should I wait until it gets a little closer to the date? Or go ahead and pay that and get the ticket now?
Thank You

You should be aware that visa requirements are more difficult now. Many believe it is because of the August Olympics. It is said that you need not only to show your travel tickets, you also need to show them your hotel reservations.
Do a search on visa under the china forum to get more information.

By the way, I just used Chinese Service Center of america for my visa. (http://www.visamailservice.com) I must have looked at a dozen sites before I chose this one. It is simple. Everything you need is on one site. You download your forms, pay by credit card, and send your passports. The turn around time for me was 10 days but I am going in September. Yes, you have to send a copy of your flight itinerary and all hotel reservations. They sent an email when they received our passports and again when they were returned. There was a phone number for additional questions. I was really happy with the service.

I bought tix from LA to Shanghai (via Guangzhou) a month ago for about $1100 USD. Try using kayak.com to check flights. It is best to use the option that checks fares 3 days before and after the date you are looking at. Also try nearby airports. I found that it was less expensive to fly into SHA aiport instead of PVG. Fares change daily, so check them often and be willing to be flexible and you will eventually find a good rate.
For Visas: we drove up to LA to the Chinese embassy and dropped off our applications. We picked up the Visas 2 weeks later. It was less expensive to go directly to the embassy than use a website. Only $130 at embassy and almost $200 on website.
Travel Tips for Beijing
visit the TEMPLE OF HEAVEN......

visit the TEMPLE OF HEAVEN... and its enchanting ECHO WALL (see pic below).
Yes, located just north of the altar surrounding the entrance to the Imperial Vault of Heaven, the Echo Wall enables a whisper to travel clearly from one end of the wall to right the other end. Knowing us, we immediately tested this out and truly, it worked! My friend was standing right at the OTHER end of the wall (very, very, very far away from me....) and yet, I could hear her - loud and clear! You must check this out when you have the opportunity.
Ballroom Dancing
by aukjejetty
Recently, the government mandated a 5-day workweek. Most Chinese now work Monday through Friday. The workday begins about 9 a.m., sometimes later, enabling thousands of Beijingers to do their morning exercises. The parks fill up with locals performing traditional tai chi or chi gong and sometimes even Western ballroom dancing. On the corner of the street of Jinghua hotel (see my accomodation tips) we saw ballroom dancing a few nights. They set up a stereo and people just start dancing in front of the restaurants. No one seems to mind being watched.

Beijing Capital International Airport
by Blatherwick
Beijing Capital is today the busiest airport in the People's Republic of China. The airport is the main hub of Air China and China Xinhua Airlines. It is located to the northeast of the central districts, 26 km from the city centre. Most people use taxicabs to reach town from the airport. Get your travel agent to get you the Chinese name of your hotel so that you can let your taxi driver read where you want to go. A taxi from the airport should cost between 70 - 120 RMB. You will have to pay the fee shown on the meter (make sure the driver uses it) plus 10 RMB toll for the airport expressway. Don't leave Beijing on the May Day holiday, it took me nearly 3 hours to reach the airport.
