Travel Tips for Beijing

Acrobatic Show

by amambaw

We really enjoyed taking in an acrobatic show while we were in Beijing. The feats are all quite amazing. Coming from a sport background where flexibility is key I am always in awe of the contortionists. If you get a chance, do take in a show. There are several in Beijing, just inquire at your hotel.

Traditional Game

by wwliu

What's game you like most? Baseball? Tennis? In narrow Beijing's old Hutong, you may easily meet a girl or a boy play with itself just using a line and a tundish-like thing. It's called Kongzhu. If you tough requied translation, it maybe mean empty bamboo. The toy is seems simple. I bet, however, you won't control it. It's an kind of high skill game. when the Kongzhu circumgyrate in high speed, it will make a stridulation. Crack player often throw the Kongzhu from line to air, then catch it again by the line. Today, playing Kongzhu still is an important program in acrobatics show.

Ancient Observatory

by aukjejetty

The Beijing Ancient Observatory is built in 1442, and when you visit you wouldn't expect it to be so old, it is still in very good condition. Personally I enjoyed the eight rooftop instruments, like the "Celestial Globe". If you are interested in astronomy you must visit this place, I guarantee you'll enjoy it!

The Observatory is west of the Friendship store, southwest of the intersection at Erhuan Lu and Jiangguomennei Dajie. Take the subway to Jianguomen stop; cross diagonally through the underpass.

Open daily 9am-5:30pm, Entrance fee Y10

Cheap souvenir shopping made easy

by melosh about Call it an economy fixed price store.

This store is probably not a good store to visit after you have made your great purchases following tough bargaining. It has fixed prices that probably will match or beat any prices you can get bargaining. Found among the cheap plastic and metal items are inexpensive souvenirs like you can buy at the airport for over 10 times the money.

Scrolls, chopsticks with "silk" holders, metal figures, pottery, hats, cheap jewelry, exotic playing cards etc.
It is also special because it is in a hutong with a little challenge attached to finding it:
If you start on the road of the Far East Int Hostel and the Leo Hostel and go to the East end of Dazhalan Jie you will find it just before you would turn left (N) to go down the lane of what Lonely planet calls (with some exageration) the "Dashilar shopping area entrance" and would return you to Qianmen. If headed east you are looking on the left side of the narrow street for what looks like a small covered alleyway with clothes for sale on both walls. The store starts about 50 feet inside. These are not the one of a kind, hand painted quality items that you want for yourself or that very special someone, but many of things are exactly what other stores or tourist vendors sell for twice the price after asking for four or more times the price you will pay here.

For example, the fake fur winter hats we bought for 20 RMB on Tianmamen square after being asked to pay 80, and were initially asked to pay 45 in a small shop that quickly went down to 30, were being sold at his store for 10 RMB. From experience with my two visits and the visits of two friends, I would say that you are likely to spend 100 to 200 RMB and carry away two large bags of goodies, but even if you only find one thing you like it will be for the best price you will find without the bargaining hassle.

Buses are extensive and incredibly cheap, but...

- buses can be very packed during rush hour s (7am-9am; 17pm-19pm)
- buses are unlikely on schedule
- bus stop signs are in Chinese only
- neither bus driver nor conductor understand English
