Correct Electrical Adapter

by teach45

We plan to use several electrical appliances(shaver, hair dryer, camera, etc)in the apt we have rented, all are dual voltage:120/220AC. I would like to buy the correct adapter(s), are they easily available in BG stores? Can I buy them in Canada or wait till we are in BG? Any links/info appreciated. Thanks

All around China we have 220 votage AC source, the socket is in the following shape:

if it does not agree with your plug, you can ask at the hotel reception if they can lend you a transmitor, they have them in most cases, or you can also buy one in near big stores or supermarkets.

I have a picture and a good description as a china tip.
You should be able to get away with a US plug as long as it is not polarized, does not have the third grounding plug and use 220AC.

See the picture and better description on my tip.

PS, if you need an adapter, it is cheaper in China but you will save time by getting them before you go.

the most popular unit is found at most airport shops, it is a round shape adapter with multiple legs to fit different plugs worlwide, I carry a couple with me all the time and so far have not ran into any place where I cannot find the right combination. You can by local adapters much cheaper.

Travel Tips for Beijing

The Hutongs( small lanes)....

by jeanx58

The Hutongs( small lanes). Those are the old part of the city. The photo shows a Hutong called Rufuli which was pulled down in 1997. The photo was also taken in 1980s
Now they provide the Hutong Tour package, to sit on rackshow and go around in Hutong area where you can visit the homes of old Beijingers.

National Day

by ntm2322

In Tian’anmen Square, October 1st of the year of 1949 at three o’clock in the afternoon, Chairman Mao Ze Dong declared the founding of the People's Republic of China and the red five-star flag was raised for the first time.

Today, October 1st of 2007, mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau celebrate its 58th anniversary with several activities, including the flag’s raising, marathons, fireworks, etc. And throughout China public places are usually decorated in a tone related to the National Day where red is the predominant color.

In this period the weather is also very nice, so many people who don’t go travel just take the day off to stay at home or go out for outdoor activities.

The National Day holidays are basically one week off for millions of Chinese and during this period they travel domestically and internationally.

It means that if you are planning to catch a few domestic flights in China during the National Day holidays (the week around October 1st) to visit some of the major tourist hot spots in China you should book your tickets and hotel reservations months before your trip.

My best advice: this is one of the best times to visit Beijing because many mainland emigrants working here during this period go back to their countryside/hometowns to visit their families.

I want to visit it!

Shopping mall in Beijing downtown

by ahoerner about New World Mall

Huge shopping mall called New World Complex, offers lots of different stores, restaurants and fast food in about four to five storeys.

It is quite near the Novotel XinQiao and the Courtyard New World Marriott hotels. You also reach the Temple of Heaven in walking distance (about 20 minutes).

Bike

by Mantissa77

Bicycles are still by far the best way to get around the city (up to the 3rd ring road). While cabs and subway trains are cheap, these have their drawbacks. The traffic jams in beijing are horrendous and cars are basically stuck on the roads; and the use of subway trains would still involve a lot of walking from the stations to the places of interests.

Bicycles are flexible. They can turn into the hutongs, and circled round the lakes. Most rented bicycles will come with a lock, and there're parking areas for bicycles, guarded by parking attendants.
