Great Beijing Hotel

We stayed in this wonderful hotel for 8 nights and loved it. Cost was approx $70 USD per night. The location is excellent in the historic district in the city center. The staff was friendly, the service excellent and the accomodations very beautiful. The hotel is only 2 years old. The breakfast buffet was very reasonable @ 50 RMB or $6 USD per person per day and had an incredible assortment of food and new items (both western and chinese) every day. The concierge staff was most helpful and though language was difficult everywhere, they made everything really easy. I would just tell them where I wanted to go and they would arrange it for me. When I went to the Great Wall, they arranged for a taxi to pick me and my two teenagers up at the hotel, drive us to the Wall, wait 2 hours while we climbed it, stop and wait while we visited the Ming Tombs on the way back at the hotel. Cost was 700 RMB or $94 USD for all three of us for the taxi services. Unbelievable! Great hotel....close to the Forbidden City, Ti'aneman Square, Silk Market and shopping district.

Unique Quality: The hotel also had a spa. 1 hour reflexology massage was $300 RMB or approx $42 USD...that was a treat. Starbucks right next door.

Lucky Choice

Well, unbeknownst to me when I booked our stay at the Park Plaza Hotel during the Olympics that it was one of the “official” hotels for the IOC. This basically meant that on the slight downside we had to go through security checks every time we entered. But on the upside, everyone there had an interesting story to tell. For instance, our hotel was the living quarters for the Olympic Arbitration Board which was comprised of 12 lawyers from around the world who were on 24 hour duty to pass judgment on any controversies which may arise. Luckily, it was a fairly uneventful Olympics; therefore, these fine gentlemen and families had plenty of time to enjoy the sights and sounds of Beijing and also could attend any Olympic event they chose. There was also George Raveling (former basketball coach of USC and all around great guy), Gold Medal track man, Carl Lewis, and, oh yes, the Argentinean Football (Soccer) team, plus many, many more members of the worldwide Olympic Community.
The hotel itself, which backs up to its sister hotel, The Regent, is an understated and extremely pleasant hotel. No large flashy lobby or pool, but everything else that affords a wonderful stay. It’s tucked away between buildings and down a side street, thus leaving taxi drivers sometimes perplexed. However, the location worked out perfectly. Besides The Regent, it’s across the street from the new Legendale Hotel, and just a couple of blocks from the Peninsula, the Novotel and several smaller Chinese hotels. Also, if you walk across the street you’re at a subway station for Line 5; and then, if you walk down three street lights (about 5 minutes) you’re right in the middle of the Warfuling shopping area, including the night snack stands, if you’re up for Scorpions, Snakes or Worms, not to mention the unmentionable parts of several beasts.
The rooms are decent sizes and have electrical plugs for practically every format, so there isn’t really a need for an adaptor. The internet was free, the safe was new and working, there were plenty of English speaking television programs, and during the Olympics they had a special box that televised every event that was going on live. So by our staying at this hotel, we were able to see much more of the Olympics than being at home, even if we didn’t have tickets to the events. I didn’t see anything they hadn’t tried to give the guests everything they desire for convenience and comfort…which brings me to the bed – we had wonderful night’s sleep. We had no needs that weren’t fulfilled. Everything was there - ironing board, umbrella, plenty of drawer space, free bottled water, and all the other usual toiletries. Buffet breakfasts were fabulous – good, strong coffee, and plenty of variety and detail to accommodate all cultures. Breakfast ends at 10:00, so don’t sleep late, you’ll miss something special.
Bottomline, I’d stay at this hotel again in a heartbeat. And to think I lucked out with my pick, since I decided to go to the Olympics the day after it started and didn’t have time for much research. Someone was looking out for me.
