Surprisingly beautiful inside

I stayed there in April of 2007 and was at first disappointed when the driver approached the buildings...they look pretty old-fashioned and blah from the outside. But from the inside...whoa! Quite nice and my suite was beautiful, on a par with any great European hotel. Plus, they have a great Japanese restaurant that's beautifully decorated and the food is really good.

Unique Quality: A lovely Chinese tea garden that's a pleasure to sit at on a sunny afternoon. My room had a large flat screen TV beside my bed and another small one on the bathroom mirror, perfect for watching CNN or BBC news as I put on my makeup in the a.m.!

The first Shangri-La Hotel in Beijing

Everything is in "Shangri-La" standard plus the room is very big and well maintained.
They offer free fruit and lunch coupon to Shangri-La member card owners.
However, the location is not so good.

Shangri La Hotel

On my last visit to Beijing I had the opportunity to stay at the Shangri La Hotel on the 4th Ringroad. After so many times staying in ugly dorms in Beijing I enjoyed the luxury of this Five-Star-Hotel. The breakfast-buffet was excellent! I love the so called Hundred Years Old Eggs! To the disgust of my fellow travellers I had at least one every morning! The Western breakfast was also very good. But that I can have every day at home!

Unique Quality: From my window in the 17th floor I had a spectacular view of Beijing. It was in February, so the air was full of sand from Gobi Desert.

Shangri-Li Hotel

Unique Quality: Up-scale Western style hotel. Nice rooms with sofa etc. Maybe a little 'antiseptic'...Quite far out from the centre, but free minibuses do the run regularly.

My favourite Hotel in Beijing

by Kiptravel about Shangri-La Beijing

I arrived late at night without transfers. So there was some difficulty in getting there. I jumped in a taxi with a driver who spoke no English as most Chinese don't. Got there eventually after a few worrying interchanged with the driver. I would strongly recommend you having prebooked transfers in Beijing.

As I had a rrived late my room had been given to someone else so without hesitation the staff a t reception upgraded me to an executive floor room. I am so glad I turned up late!!!

The room I had was on one of the highest floors and offered great views of the sprawling city of Beijing. That is, when you can see anything through the thick pollution.
