THE Best Duck House??
by conan253
Where is THE BEST Peking Duck in Beijing? I seem to remember some Anthony Bourdain show with one in a back alley somewhere, 300 years old? Anybody come across one???

Depends how you define "best". The most popular is "quan ju de kao ya". It's by qian men=front gate way. Seats for about 2000. Costs about 120 a head.

I can't disagree with Quan Ju De. It has been around for ages and has restaurants strategically located around Beijing. Its simply yummy but a little more mass market now. However, a good rival to Quan Ju De would be Da Dong Restaurant. They have 2 outlets in PKK. You can find the addresses under the Beijing pages. Plenty of good reviews.

The one in a back alley might be Li Qun.
I've eaten at both outlets of Da Dong and find it pretty good too.
Not really impressed with Quanjude, but I ate that in Kashgar and Shanghai.

Travel Tips for Beijing
Do your homework before leaving home
by ntm2322
Several weeks before leaving home research the Internet for data concerning the place you will be heading to.
Since you will be visiting unfamiliar places and folks, possessing beforehand some valuable data will help you make the most out of your trip. Otherwise you might waste hours trying to find something that you could have known earlier if you had done your “homework” back at home.
And it applies especially to Beijing because is a huge city. Getting the wrong directions or places you would like to head to it could you cost many precious hours or even the entire day.
Roof decorations
by filipdebont
Al the buildings in the Forbidden City were very richly decorated. But it is really worth to stop and pay attention on the decorations on the roofs.
Almost every roof has those small statues. these statues represent persons, demons and animals (dragons).
I was told that these satues were there to keep the bad ghosts away.
Above these satties you see a kind of wire, that is just to keep the birds away.
Visit the Great Wall all alone
by Anouk&Ric
Visit a portion of the Great Wall totally pure, and not renovated, though perfectly accessible.
It is about 90 kms north of Beijing at the border with Hebei.
400 Yuan from Beijing inclusive Taxi ; Local guide : Lei (Tel. 67349509) will take you there.
The Night Market on Wangfujing Street
by mikelisaanna about Night Market
The stores of Wangfujing Street close at 9PM, but a small night market stays open after that which caters to tourists. The night market consists of vendor stalls that stretch along a few blocks of side streets and alleys that branch off from Wangfujing Street near the southern end of its pedestrian mall section. Most of the stalls sell either souvenirs or food. The souvenirs are the same things that you see in shops all over the city, and you will have to bargain to get down to the right price. We shopped for postcards and Christmas ornaments there. The food on offer in the food stalls ranges from ordinary (ice cream) to unusual (scorpion-on-a-stick and seahorse-on-a-stick are a couple of the stranger ones that we saw). For souvenirs, try to buy them for about 1/3 of the asking price. You will have to bargain for a few rounds and walk away once or twice to get to the right price.
Beijing taxis
by unisil
Taxis are buy far the best way to get around.
Firstly, always insist on the meter, if they say 50 RMB chances are the ride will cost as little as 11RMB on a meter. You are a dumb westerner and you can afford more than the meter they think.
There are three types I found, the two toned honest ones, the Red fake taxi with suspect meters and the luxury black cabs.
Be prepared for the ride of your life as they drive fast, go through red lights, almost kill pedestrians and dart and weave with almost not a care in the world...words just can not discribe the driving skills, you will just see when you get here...but we did not see many accidents so I guess they are luck drivers.
The fares were so cheap I tried to tip well to make there day as most work 24 hours without a break.
