2 questions: calling cards and money from 2002

by marielexoteria

I have 2 questions for you guys:

1) I usually call my family once a week and would like to do so when in Beijing. My guide book says that you need to have 1 card to use a public phone and 1 card to make international phone calls. The more I read about it, the less I get it. Has anybody got any experience on this or has a better idea as of what I should do? I'd like to be know what to do in case I can't use Skype.

2) We have some left over RMB from when hubby went to Beijing in 2002, have they changed the design of the bills so that these are unusable or can I still use them?

TIA

Skype is available everywhere (everywhere I've been)

Money hasn't changed - they've added a bit, but the old ones still circulate freely.

1) Get a local SIM card (hopefully you have an unlocked handphone you can use in China) and use that to call home with the 12593 calling code added. Otherwise, buy a phone card to use in a public phone, plus an IP calling card to make international calls -- the latter you could use with the public phone, or a phone in your hotel room, or the local SIM card.
2) Still legal tender, don't worry!

Lufthansa Center
50 Xiao Liangmaqiao Lu
Chaoyang District If you want to do some souvenier shopping and am tired of bargaining, you should consider Lufthansa Centre. It is a huge shopping complex, and the highest floor houses all kinds of Chinese products. The quality are excellent, and there is no concern of being ripped off. It IS a problem to find wine

by angelochka

I've noticed that chinese people mostly prefer drinking beer if they want to have fun and beer perfectly goes along with any food and it doesnt matter what kind of food it is, from which province..really doesnt matter. After being bit tired of chinese beer (besides beer is not my style and usuallly i prefer wine, more abt it on my HP in wine travellogue) i wanted to try a local wine and at one if the restaurants i found out they recommended Tibetan wine..?? but do they have vineyards in Tibet??:)) obviously my choice was better not to try this one...
if you are very stubburn and still want some wine i would recommend you to go any 4-5* stars western hotel..i'm sure here they will find some for you:)

Watching Swimming

by SLLiew

In Beijing Water Cube Aquatic center, swimming is one of the most popular sports to watch.

But it is all over very quickly due to fast races of over 50m, 100m or 200m. The relays and longer distances are slightly longer to make your cheering and shouts and your paid ticket lasting longer.

The 4 strokes are freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breastroke. Swimming is the most gender equal with 17 men and 17 women events. The latest event added this year is marathon 10km.

Swimming power house are USA team especially for men. And Australia for women. For Asian countries, Japan, South Korea and China sprang a few surprises.

The highlist is Michael Phelps of USA winning a record 8 gold medals breaking the record of Mark Spitz USA in Munich Olympics of 7 medals.

Markets near Beijing Language University (I)

by Nprawira about Shunxin Baihuo Fuzhuang Cheng

For aspiring chefs living near the Beijing Language University, this is the place to buy their stuff. On the 1st floor of this market are stalls of fresh food with prices cheaper than what are in modern supermarkets and roadside shops. Even though the name of the market suggests a clothing market, the Wudaokou market nearby actually is a better one to shop for cheap apparel. Fruits, vegies, meat, poultry and fish.

Beijing by Night II

by ahoerner about Tiananmen by Night

The government buildings are a tourist attraction to many chinese.

That night the square was relatively well visited, although the temperature was about zero.

It is amazing to walk on there and remember what already happened on that square.

Enjoy the view!
