best area to stay

by 1Karan

hi

What would be the best area to stay in Beijing. Need a hotel near tourist spots/ shopping area. Also Preferably near a good mall where one can get branded clothes.

thanks

One of the best spot is near Forbidden City and Wangfujing Road. I can suggest Days Inn Forbidden City Hotel. You can check details on my Beijing page.

I would stay in Dongcheng district, within the 2nd ring road.
Why are you looking for branded clothes in China? If you're looking for international brands, they're more expensive in this country.

Thanks..ok ..I was under the impression that international brands are cheaper in Beijing. Wrong information I guess! Anyway if you could also suggest a 5 star hotel in the range of 200 USD a night close to the area you mentioned or tourist area...i would appreciate it!

Have you considered looking on TripAdvisor for hotel reviews?
No, international brands are not cheaper in Beijing at all, unless you mean to say that you're looking for fake stuff -- which to me defeats the point.

Travel Tips for Beijing

Money Exchanging

by woosha708

Banks around Beijing are good for exchanging money, but ATMs are BEST (so I've found).

Avoid travelers checks - can be extremely difficult to cash in at banks!

Beijing Airport ATM works just fine to grap some yuan upon arrival ... and to exchange money back (to $) upon departure.

Local Department Stores

by machomikemd

To Get a Feel of Local Setting I suggest you go to a local department store to be experience local beijing shopping if you have time and these are not near Wang Fu Jing but farther in Other districts, fortunately our privated tour guide showed us to one of this Local Department stores in the Dong Cheng District and shows ordinary stuff but rich in chinese flavor. Again do this if you have time or someone to accompany youand you can buy real chinese stuff w/o the tourist crowds.

there is no haggling here but you are guaranteed the the prices are low since these are not touristy areas! assorted real chinese products.

Packing List

by anglosaxon

Take power plug adaptors for all regions. China itself has at least 5 different types 2 pin round, 2 pin flat straight with earth and 2 pin flat angled etc. The big hotels (Shangri La) use the British style 3 pin. Some apartments use the US 2 pin They can be bought quite cheaply in Beijing at any market (Shang Chang) or electrical shop. Outside of Beijing it's more difficult.

Don't forget the travelogue 'A Year in Beijing'

Famous chinese fake goods.

by wangyixuan1981 about Xiu-Shui St.

you are looking for Xiu-Shui St. Market.

you can take subway line 1 to the Yong-An-Li station.

fake goods are not set out publicly. you should ask one of the holders privately.

all fake T-shirts and handbags at around 200 CNY.

Sanlitun

by mafi_moya

Nightlife in Beijing doesn't yet compare to London or Bangkok, but it's far far better than you'd imagine. Increasing numbers of top international DJs have begun to play clubs here and the music scene is pretty up to date. A few bands have made the trip too (Suede and Morcheeba have played here in 2003 - not the biggest of names but a sign of the growth in the music scene). Most of the nightlife is centred around the Sanlitun Embassy district. Sanlitun Lu itself has numerous bars with live music and imported beers and is a good place to start. The clientele is mixed but in most places predominantly Chinese rather than foreigners. Vogue (expensive and fashionable) probably remains Beijing's most renowned club, but to be honest it's pointless naming names. New clubs open and close so quickly that it's best just to ask around when you get there - or pick up one of the numerous free 'what's on' style magazines from a hotel or bar.
