Booking air Shanghai to Beijing ... November

by nomad7890

I am entertaining the thought of going to China in November but I will be flying into Shanghai. I would like to purchase a round trip ticket from Shanghai to Beijing so I can leave for Beijing shortly upon arrival to Shanghai.

What is a good site to book this ticket? I understand Air China could be the best option, however I am not sure I am finding the official Air China site.

While on this post, could you also confirm if the weather at that time of the year will not interfere with going to the wall at Mutianyu (sp?).

You may want to consider an open jaw ticket. Fly from your home to Shanghai, and home from Beijing. That way do don't have to backtrack. It will save you time and maybe money. But maybe you are using a free frequent flyer ticket. :)

elong.com is a good sight for domestics tickets. I have other sights listed as Travel Tips on my China page.

You should be aware the prices for domestic flights often get cheaper the closer to departure. Check the web sites and change the departure dates to see what mean. There are many flights using both airports in Shanghai to Beijing.

You can also take an overnight train, I flew from Shanghai to Beijing in May 2007, took an overnight train to Xi'an, then flew back to Shanghai.

Thanks Mike ... I was trying to stay with the airline where I keep my points - they only go to Shanghai. I'll check the links this weekend! Thanks again!

Generally speaking, none of the Chinese airlines offers any special price for a round tip - it's just the price of the two one-ways added together.

There are plenty of flights all day. Check english.ctrip.com
But depending on your timings, it might be worthwhile to take the overnight train between the cities. It's cheaper, and saves the price of a hotel. Takes approximately 12 hours, 7pm - 7am.

Weather that time of year should be OK, dry and cold, sometimes sunny.

Ed and I flew all throughout China, booking out tickets once we got there.
We had no problem at all!
Also, it is cheaper buying once there as there is a mark up buying from this end.
There is explanation of it on our pages.

Email me if I can be of help.

Regards fellow Cubana! (hahaha)

Fake Emperess ?

by Lemonita

I've come upon these rent-a-costume stands in all touristic places and it seems there are only chinese people who like to dress like the Emperor/Emperess.

They are really popular as the line is pretty long, all waiting to have their pictures taken... Chinese people like everything that is touristic...

A favourite past time of China

by egosyncratix

What beats a group of friends, squatting at the side of the road, playing chess or cards? Apparently, this common sight in the hutong is China's favourite past time (not drinking tea or coffee at Starbucks)

Lido market bites the dust

by mke1963 about Lido market

The famous covered market opposite the Lido Hotel has been demolished, some months after the dread demolition signs first appeared.
This was one of the easier markets to use because it was small, just one alleyway inside a long, grotty white-tiled building.
Alas, it is just a pile of rubble now, and the CD and massage shops went a few weeks beforehand.
If you are used to buying your CDs and DVDs at the shop one block away on the other side of the traffic lights, they have (voluntarily) moved to behind the row of restaurants on the Lido Hotel side of the lights. The Lido vendors have all moved on, many to Hongqiao, and some even to laitai. Not a lot for whatever you want: clothes, shoes, trinkets, DVDs

Shuttle bus Xidan - Airport

by Avieira67

In my opinion, this is the best and cheapest way to travel from and to the airport in Beijing.
I made the connection XIDAN - AIRPORT, line 2, and it is convenient because Xidan is served by underground.
First Bus departures from the airoport at 07:00, and from Xidan (building aviation) at 05:40.
Fare is 16 CNY, and the journey time is about 55 min.
