Karaoke

by thepatv

We will be in Beijing for the Olympics and one traveler in group expressed an interest in Karaoke bars. While most of us are adults there will be a few teens in the group, 14 and 16. Can anyone recommend good Karaoke bars. We are staying near the south train station and yongdingmen. We prefer something in walking distance but we can take cabs.

Karaoke bars where random people go up on stage and sing in front of other people, is almost unheard-of in China. In fact, I haven't seen ANY of those places around.
Karaoke places here have private rooms where you and your own friends sing together. Nothing wrong with having teens or even kids around.

Go on Google and type in KTV Beijing, you will find a few million of them and certainly a few near your hotel. Most as Jocylne said are private rooms you book by the hour or night for "private karaoke" so you only make a foul in front of your friends instead of the general public.

There are several "bar streets" which has some open karaoke but the drinks are super expensive and believe me you may sound good but most you really do not want to listen to, so stick with the KTVs.

Be careful in picking the appropate one as many are also slightly on the seedy side (ie: many have female hostesses you can hire to "sing" with the guests).

I've been to beijing once. We(as a family) were looking for a nice karaoke. Our hotel staff informed us that we should be aware that karaoke bars in beijing are usually a place to pick up 'paid girls' so most of their customers are middle aged men. We were very concerned with our teenage daughters n nieces, so we decided to stick with the 'food quest' instead.

Well, when would you be in Beijing? I'd be in Beijing for the Olympics too, and I do like going to karaoke (in Shanghai, mostly). If you don't mind, we could meet up and go together? I could definitely keep you away from the wrong type (hostess) of places.

Because of the continental climate, it will be very windy and sandy when you travel during fall seasons. The best period will be around May to July. Summer can be VERY hot while it is cold during winter time.

Spitting and Smoking

by aukjejetty

Beijingers are not formal, nor do they have a set of enigmatic social rules that excludes outsiders. The Chinese do not bow (as the Japanese do), and they do not remove their shoes upon entering a house. Beijingers tend to be frank, and they do not, as a rule, thank others for favors, except by later actions. They shake hands but seldom embrace or kiss in public. They joke, but they do not speak loudly; and they seldom brag about their own accomplishments. Until recently, spitting in public and smoking whenever and wherever one pleased were common habits, but in recent years in Beijing, spitting has become unacceptable and smoking, in many public areas, has become unlawful. Don't expect the same thing when you leave Beijing and explore the country. I especialy found the smoking very bad in busses and trains. In sleepertrains it is okay, but in sleeperbusses they smoke like crazy.

Huanghua Great Wall

by aukjejetty

If you want to get away from the commerce and busy life in the city (and from the many tourists), it is a good idea to go this part of the Great Wall. Huanghuacheng is about 60km north of Beijing. You can reach it by bus, see my Huanghuacheng page for all the detailes of this experience.

when on a guided tour, or visitng the various emporiums, you will be confronted by shelves of enamelware of all colours, separated by brass strips that separate the colours.
this art form originally from the middle east. introduced by the Arab Traders is now synonmous with the Beijing and all Arts & Crafts stores throughout China

more about the techniques later ;-))) above average for " Jing Gung " finer items

Taxis Are Really Cheap in Beijing!

by Susanna1975

Starting fee is only appr. 10 yuan = 1 euro and you drive 2 kilometres with this fare. You can drive appr 30 mins with only 20 yuan = 2 euros. Just heck that the driver has valid licence in the frond and he puts the meter on. Otherwise just change the taxi - it is really easy to find available one.
