The ditch

In the rush for entering the city, we had no time to see the walls and their defensive condition. Arriving to the north door, exit is more calm, and it's possible to see the ditch that surrounds all the city, with the defensive towers in each corner.

Using Taxis
by clairegeordio
We were very wary of taking taxis in Beijing as we had read so many horror stories before our arrival, however we had no problems at all. You just need to make sure that their metres are on. All taxis should also display a large drivers registration card on the passenger's dashboard, with a driver's number, photo and name on.. The most common taxis start at 10 yuan for the first 2.5 miles (4km) and then increase by varying amounts depending on the type of cab you have taken. We never found them to be expensive though, especially compared to UK prices! Eg we took at taxi from Temple of Heaven to the Summer Palace which cost around 50-60 RMB for a half hour journey. A trip from the airport costs around 90RMB with 10RMB for the toll.
It is best to assume that the taxi driver won’t speak English so it is best to get someone to write down your destination in Chinese characters for you to show to the taxi driver. Some guide books and maps have the destination written in Chinese characters too.
