Excluding accommodation, I think 1500-2500 RMB/month should be enough.

If you plan to travel quite a bit, figure on onwards of 3500 RMB/month.

Guangzhou is about 3000 km south of Beijing, Hong Kong another 200 km from there. Air fare is about 1200 one-way; train is one-third the price, but takes 24 hours or more. Hong Kong is also a whole lot dearer than China.

speaking from experience, monthly expenses (excluding accomodation, electricity etc) will be around 2000-2500 rmb. if you manage your money well, it can be lower than 2000rmb. but I spend a lot, so sometimes my monthly expenses goes around 3000.
for hongkong, I went there with my sister last year, 3 days after chinese new year. i spent around 4000hk dollars maximum. it's expensive because the restaurants charge extra for holiday tax etc. we stayed there for 4 days 3 nights. or 5 days 4 nights, i couldn't quite remember.
Travel Tips for Beijing
Temple of Heaven
by extrajoce
The Temple of Heaven is one of the great monuments of Beijing, and definitely a site to visit if you are in Beijing for more than a day. It is not a matter of size, but the balance and harmony of the architecture is impressive - you just wouldn't change a thing.

Long long ago, there were a couple living in happiness. Husband called Hou Yi and his wife called Chang E. Hou Yi was toxophily hero who annihilated 9 suns and keep back only sun in the sky what saved all people in the earth. One Day, he got a pack of elixir. Eating a half would keep a person long live never die. He was very glad and play share it with her wife. However, Chang E ate all the elixir slinkingly, then she felt her body lighter bit by bit. At last, she fly to the Moon. For punishing her, the Jade Emperor who master the heaven order that stay Chang E in the cold Moon palace forever. Only a rabbit accompany with Chang E who called Jade Hare-the moon. Until today, you still see a rabbit in the Moon. That is.

Chinese cabbage
by Kuznetsov_Sergey
Basically Beijing consists of narrow streets with two-storeyed houses. In little shops dealers offer the Chinese cabbage, and there was an impression that it is the basic food stuffs. There was time of a supper, and characteristic smells of the prepared food reached from everywhere.
Splurge out in Beijing
by vic&michael about Wangfujing Street
I visited Oriental Plaza on Wangfujing Street. The food court had many choices of delicious food and restaurants. Easy to order by pointing, or restaurants have English menus. The shopping itself is very expensive. Brand-name stores. Nothing that you wouldn't find in any other generic upper-class Department Store in the world. Nice to visit if you are feeling like a hot and dirty backpacker, and would like a rest in clean white, air-conditioned area with a cool drink & clean meal!
transfer from Xingang Port to Beijing city
by gentlebz
Our cruiser stopped at Xingang port (in Tianjin city), it's a long distance from Beijing city.
we booked a car through hotelguidechina.com, $160 from the port to Beijing, much better price than the cruiser offer.
some one took train from Tianjin to Beijing, but the train station is not close by the port, so we think book a car transfer is a better way to get Beijing.
good luck.
